My Observatory Project

Things are looking up!

Someone asked to see the telescope when we got it together?

We will get “first light” tomorrow night. Gonna point it to Flint Michigan and get a pic of TomS.

The Gunnison Valley Observatory

Man… that’s awesome Poppa W. I am green with envy. I surfed over to the website. You guys should be commended for all your hard work. :agree:

You guys are going to mount a nice high res camera and give us some pics of Uranus right? (Err… on second thought… skip that! :p ) LOL…

That’s great man… I’m sure the youth of the area will be thrilled.

D

PS Hey… in some of those pics… what’s that white stuff all over the ground? You guys have a ticker tape parade or sumpin’?

That'd be California's water storage. Better known as Colorado snow.

As far as Uranus goes.... never mind. I did tell a reporter from The Denver Post that "I don't know my asteroid from a hole in the ground." That one went over well... If they cain't take a joke...........

We have some CCD camera's - that is what they call 'em ain't it? That's for the guys who are into it... I just had a dream to build it for the kids. Raised a lot of money in and out of the community, it really is awesome to stand in the dome and see this great piece of work and silently think... "I did this?" It still amazes me.

Hope to see some things like this though. It was taken thru a 16 inch in New Mexico - Ours is a 30 inch. Awesome ain't it!

I also have an idea to "Take a picture of when you were born."
Find a star whose light left it to travel to earth in 1952 and that would be my pic. Gotta refine that one though.

It’s just incredible…

What is your altitude where you live?
Cold nights are things that will help you see better through the atmosphere…
You know all that anyway…
A 30" mirror…
Where was it “Ground” ????

Bill…

Wow. :agree:

I think the birthday picture idea is wonderful! If course narrowing it down to the birth minute may be difficult. :)

I’m REALLY fascinated by that stuff.

Fantastic.
Best of luck with this Poppa and the gang.

Thanx all - we will view tomorrow - had problems balancing it today :frowning:
It’s snowing anyway - incredible.

It was ground in a little town in Utah years ago.

We are at 7,772 feet at the Observatory.

Clear winter nights - gonna be great!

Wow… it’s only 622 feet above sea level here. A mere pimple compared to 7,772 feet.

D

You know you got to Christen this event… Get that bottle of Hoot ch and make sure you photograph the event…

Bill…

lol - There’s gonna be all kinds of events - it’s become a political football… funny actually how many folks laughed and said it would never happen - now they’re wanting a photo op with it.
So is life…

Play the ol' "Well we can certainly accommodate that... make your check payable to..." game with them Poppa. No such thing as a free lunch right?

Have you been able to eye-ball through it yet?

D

hey D - just got home from 4 hours of collimation - got it close enough to view some tonight. Saturday May 24th, 2008. Whew! :agree:

COLLIMATION!?!?!? Is that LEGAL in Colorado? :p

Geez… how do you go about aligning a big 30 incher? Do have some specialized instrumentation or just by making very, very precise mechanical measurements?

D

PS In case you haven’t noticed, I find this very fascinating… :)
