n-track wont run with Symantec installed
i downloaded the demo of n-track the other day and everything was working fine untill i installed Symantec Endpoint Protection v11… all of a sudden n-track stopped working, i’d get an egg timer for a second then nothing would happen. it’s taken me a reformat and literally three days of digging to find out what caused the problem… i mirrored every event i could think of on my laptop from the reinstall to find out it was def Symantec that stopped it from working… uninstalled it and n-track is back to working fine. just wanted to let anyone else know so you don’t have to go thru what i just went thru as it was seriously doin my head in!!! maybe FASoft need to look at possible conflicts between the two progs so maybe you could come up with a work around?? anyhow, if your having the same issue as me the only way forward at the moment would be to uninstall Symantec EPP. i’m going to try and install Symantec Antivirus and see if that does the same thing so i’ll keep you posted…
Any virus protection can lead to trouble when recording or playing back. The reason is because most virus protection scans every packet read and write to and from the hard drives and netcards and any other I/O access points. That can seriously cripple a slow hard drive, which most laptop harddrives are.
As a rule virus protection should be turned off when recording, though that leaves the machine a risk. For that reason it’s good to also turn off net access (before disabling the virus protection), because net access is the usual in road from problem children.
Then again some folks do fine with it all on. I think they are being lucky. Not all virus protection is created equal.
As you found out, it can be hard to track this down. Why n-Tracks just sat there could point to many things. (Sounds like the audio clock wasn’t ticking.) It all depends on what Symantec Endpoint Protection it doing. That includes Symantec Antivirus, so just running Symantec Antivirus may or may not fix things. It will be interesting to hear if it works with just antivirus running.
Personally, I HATE Symantec’s stuff these days. It’s just too dog gone intrusive. On several machines here, we had to download a special utility just to un-install Symantec. We use Kaspersky here at work and I use AVG Free on all my personal machines.
phoo is right of course, turn that stuff OFF when DAW’ing…

As long as we are talking - why do we need to be downloading WindowsXP “updates” which seem to be all about security And running virus protection and Firewall? doesn’t virus protection keep gettin updated for the same reasons windows keeps filling up my hard drive with “updates?”
I went with BitDefender for my virus protection on advise from my IP. Never had a problem with it getting in the way. www.bitdefender.com

thats just what i had figured too, whata buncha $HiT that is!! on my net puter i run windows 98,have done so for many years now and i have only once gotten some kinda bug it seemed,i reformated an that was that, i remember reading somewhere that it is thought they dont target the 98 platform with the majority of virus's now cause not many are using 98,wife's xp setup has been hit more then a few times, she has got protection and updates up the bung and still gets hit,,i dont have any kinda firewall or anything on my old 98,,,

err, sorry but that's akin to sharing needles or having sex with a lady of the night without suitable protection. I suspect you're behind a NAT router or hardware firewall or your PC would have been plagued with worms within minutes on being on the Internet.
Anyway, the moral of the story is, use a separate PC, boot, partition, profile, whatever for your DAW.

I know I am... In addition, all the PC's in the house run AVG. Knock wood, we have never been hit.
A few bytes of protection are worth a whole evening of re-installing.
I also have a dual boot setup for my DAW PC. I keep an image of the HD's stored off line with Acronis Trueimage. It can be restored in just a bit if something happens. Beats the crap outta spending a whole evening re-installing everything...

There are worms that seek out unprotected machines and will infect them, simply when they are on the internet. The user doesn’t have to do anything except connect the machine – no reading email – no surfing the internet.
Red Code was one such worm. It infected machines running MS ISS Webserver. That service was on by default at one time, so any machine running Win98 would be vulnerable, regardless. A security patch was made available, but many didn’t take it. Too bad for those that didn’t apply the patch. The patch fixes the whole in security and turned off ISS by default.
I MAY have found something interesting about Norton anti-virus. I have been disconnecting form the internet and disbling Norton whenever I record. Tody, after diabling Norton Intenet Security (it takes turning off 7 different Settings) I looked at the taksmanage services and it looks to me like Norton has left somethings runing even when turned off.
anyone able to confirm this?
Bax
Hi all, took 2 days to get to log in here, pissing me off to no end.
Bax, I can confirm norton still running. The only stop for me is (Vista) using windows defender to stop norton from running on start up. Which means re-booting for DAW work. But don’t have the bucks for 6 or 7 puters sitting around. Too many Les Pauls to string up (now who’s fault was that!)
You need a 500 gig hard drive for Vista and Norton updates!
Norton AV sucks.
Vista sucks.
My DSL sucks.
This forum software sucks.
The internet sucks!
Dang it, pay me no mind, having a really bad week and no coffee yet this morning.
Have a great day and Happy Holidays everyone.
