Project randomly getting quiet in the middle?

I can’t figure out why my master volume or something on the entire project just dips amd goes quiet in the middle, i dont think i have any automations on, and i undo’d back further than before i even noticed it im sure, but it’s still there

sorry im a bit of a novice to all this, help?

I’m using N-track studio pro version 10.4.43 for Android

I’ve found 2 things that cause this - n-Track will automatically duck the volume if your master level exceeds 0.0dB, the higher the level the more pronounced the effect is. The other thing is not to do with n-Track at all. I use some software called RealPhones to adjust the response on my headphones, I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out why my song kept ducking at a certain point even though n-Track wasn’t limiting it, it turned out that RealPhones was doing the same thing so I just had to adjust its level down a bit.

Hope this helps

Ian.

Wait so, maybe it’s because it’s too loud since I had a track with a ton of distortion that got pretty loud but i didnt let it get to that point with a ton of other filters that muffled it, but maybe i hit a setting wrong?
Also, during playback, theres this green bar margin at the top of the tracks area, right, but when the playhead passes over the area when the sound gets quieted, theres a tonnn of little red verticle ticks in the green area–is this relevant here?
i saw something about turning on automation with the little sorta gears icon at the top that turns red when turned on, could that maybe it? is there a way to access all thr automations made?

But the thing is, does yours export and still retain that volume ducking? because if it’s not a software side thing that shouldn’t happen right, because I export my stuff to listen back to often and it’s still in there

Yes, those little red ticks are where it would normally have gone into “clipping”, but n-Track just ducks the sound to avoid distortion (I assume). I use a plugin called FreeClip on the master channel which allows a higher overall volume but effectively removes the peaks, as long as the peaks aren’t too severe you don’t even notice it’s there. If they are you start to get some horrible distortion on your mix, in which case you need to adjust your levels to reduce the peaks.

Either way, you need to identify which tracks are causing the clipping, and either adjust their levels down, or maybe add a compressor effect to even out the levels.

Hi Fatfolds,

note that you can disable soft clipping. On Android it’s a setting in the Settings box. On desktop you can disable in the right click menu on the main playback meter window. Without soft-clipping the sections where the time axis becomes red will sound distorted.

ahhh thank you that fixed it!! ty ty ty

thank you for explaining the “why” with the red marks, i was gonna ask about it, i appreciate it!!

i already had gone through and tried adjusting levels but none of em would budge somehow so I tried what another reply said and turned off soft clipping and that worked
