recording in mono

welcome to bizarro world

I am still chasing a gremlin and have no idea what is wrong.I
am running a dell dim 2400 with pent 4 and 512 ram, and just put in a sound blaster audigy 2 value card.I have a audio buddy pre amp which I thought had a bad output until common sense kicked back in and I realized It was okay.
When I select mono recording on the rec meter prefs sometimes ntrck will say it is closing and that is it .When I reopen,it will be back on the stereo option. When it does not close on the mono option I get no sound on the mono and no reading on the vu meter. Everything works perfect with the mono/2 track and stereo option. I played around with switching between 16 and 24 bit and mme and wdm but does not seem to make any difference. I have a stereo jack plugged into my preamp going to the sound card.I am out of ideas.Any out there.

I don't think that audigy will support 24bit recording. I've used those in the past and the most I remember they can do is 16bit.

Tellin' a card to record or playback 24bit. when it cannot is asking for crashes and trouble usually follows.

I think you can look up your soundcards specifications via
Preferences> Record settings> something else. Check and see what your recording in. 44100? 48000? try not to go beyond the limitations of your card.
I would set program priority to "Highest".
Thre's all kind of options in there, just customize it for your system and needs.

keep shinin'

Switched back to 16 bit. I dont need 24. does anyone know if the cord coming out of my preamp should be a mono cord or does it matter?

I think if the cord is Balanced (TRS) that is fine, even if going into an un-balanced jack. A mono signal will remain mono.

And if you have a L & R RCA pair going into the soundcard from the pre, you’ll probably have your inputs routed in Devices or Soundcard Mixer to accomodate that: Each input to it’s own track.

What kind of plugs do you have going in?

Compared to what alot of you do w ntrack I am almost embarassed to be having this problem with the type of recording I do. I just do acoustic rhythm and lead tracks nothing else.I have a stereo cord with a 1/4 jack on one end and a 1/8 on the other .One goes in the pre amp output the other in the sound card line input.Simple. But on mono setting I have to turn the preamp gain way up to just get a -15 reading on the recording meter.I switch to stereo or mono/2 tracks and I have to set everything back down and I have better recordings.I hope I am not sounding like a broken record but on mono it seems that half the signal is going somewhere and I dont know where.

Hi,
I think your problem is the cord.
You’re connecting a balanced mono output to an unbalanced stereo input. This won’t work.

You need a cord that connects like this.
- 1/4" tip —> 1/8" tip
- 1/4" ring —> 1/4" sleeve (=ground) (or: use a mono plug)
- 1/4" sleeve —> 1/8" sleeve

Leave the 1/8" ring unconnected, or use it to connect a second channel of audio.
Good luck!

I think either guitar center misinformed me or did not realize what I was doing.I tried to explain and they said this would work.I think you are right.I will see what I can find. Thanks

You can still record in mono with the cable that you have.
Set n-Track to record to Stereo–>two Mono tracks and disable recording from the right channel.

Theoretically you could even take advantage of the balanced preamp output (to eliminate cable noise) like this:

- record your track in stereo (using the cable that you have).
- load the resulting wav in a wave editor (e.g. Cool Edit, Audacity etc.)
- invert the right channel
- add the right channel to the left channel (0.5 : 0.5)
- save the left channel as mono .wav and re-import in your project.

This is why I like this forum!

This forum is a wealth of info.I thank you recording gurus who answer my seemingly really obvious and sometimes stupid questions. For the time being I will use the dual mono setting with one side disabled. Thanks

With all respect, in my experience, it has become stupid not to ask! :)

Here’s how I hook up my AudioBuddy to my Audigy soundcard:

A 1/4’’ mono plug from each of the AB’s outputs to a 1/8" stereo mini plug into the soundcard. I found a cable that takes two 1/4" mono plugs to a stereo 1/4" female plug. Then another cable 1/4" male stereo to 1/8’ male stereo.

As mentioned above, if I’m only recording one channel, I set the record setting to only record that channel to one mono track, and change it if I am recording both channels to two tracks.

Valrecorder,
I will try that combo. If I understand you correctly you are using the two mono track setting with one disabled. Do you use the ‘mono only’ on your recording vu meter at times also?
Thanks

One last response and I think I’ll let this subject rest, since I have beat it into the ground.
I took valrecorders advice with cord usage and came to the conclusion that when I set the record vu at "mono only "I lose some signal. But when set on mono/two tracks it is fine.I just disable one side and I end up with the same thing, one mono track. In other words, it is a little screwy but if I can record stereo and mono but just have to disable one side, no big deal. Thanks for all the input. This forum is great!
