I’m toying with the idea of running a VST host app like Xultop’s Chainer to use for outboard effects processing. Chainer works very well for this, but it only has 2 ins/outs. What I’m looking for is an app that can use multiple ins and outs simultaneously with a separate effect on each.
For example, CH1 has an effect which outputs to CH1. Then, CH2 has it’s own isolated effect that sends back out on CH2, CH3, CH4 etc.
The PC in question has 6 ins/outs and runs windows XP. Thanks for any info you might have.

I’m not exactly sure, but I think you may find that Senderella does what you want.
It runs inside a vst host and offers flexible routing.
I don’t think it can route multiple inputs / outputs, but you can certainly have multiple instances of it running at the same time, each one routing to different places.
I would imagine the processing overhead will give you latency issues if you want real time effects.
You may also want to look at Reaper, which has very flexible routing.
