Resonator guitars

Know anything about them…

Does anyone here know anything about resonator guitars?
Like what is the best of the “low end” for around 250 or so?
I know the Nationals et al. are the best but what about Regal, Galveston, Rogue, Epiphone and those on the lower end?
I am seriously considering a purchase but don’t know that much about the different brands and how they stack up.
I’ve read different reviews and they are pretty much all over the place except for the Rogues -
which seem to have a problem with splitting tailpieces.
Add to that the fact that very few stores here stock them which means I will probably have to buy without playing (which I hate to do).
Any insight will be very helpful.

thanx

Save up some more money and go for a Beard goldtone

I left that one off…right now i am considering a gibson-epiphone, goldtone, regal (2)

all under 300

A friend has a Fender that sounds pretty nice. It’s a sub $300 jobby. Maybe I can find a link somewhere… back in a few…

HERE…

I’m pretty sure his is a round neck though and he got it for around 3 C-notes…

You looking for a square neck to play with a bar or a round neck?

I’ve had a Regal (wooden body, spider-style resonator, natural top, cutaway - don’t know the model designation) since mid-nineties and have no plans to give it up. Rather electric guitar-like neck, plays well, sounds pretty good.

Pics at http://www.yrttimaa.net/regal.html. (The pickup system is not original, though - but works pretty well.)

Thanks for all of the responses…

although its priced right, I’ve read not very good reviews on the Fender.
but the reviews are from very professional types who probably have closets full of nationals, beltonas, etc

regals get a lot of good comments…i have my eyes on a really nice one…that or a gold tone…

i think i have this narrowed down to just a couple of brands.
but, every time that happens something else comes into play then i’m all up in the air again…

like, now.
i have seen a pretty nice looking jay turser electric…like this or this…

i wonder what these play like?

so, now you can see why i’m confused.
i am still leaning toward the regal or goldtones because i have heard good things about their playability.

Hi g8torcliff:

My late Steel Guitar Friend, Leonard Had two Dobro’s… Is that the Brand Name of them ????
One was a Chromed one…
I think he paid some 5 grand for it…
The other one was a Spruce top one… (the one he played and used on the stage)…
He had a Shadow Piezo Pickup installed in it… I believe the Shadow Pick-up is a German Manufactured Pickup…

Installed According to the Nashville players of the instruments… The placement of the pickup is well documented as I remember…
(Played with a Bar) The strings were some 3/4 inch above the fret-plate… The style of guitar he played…

I forget the Tuning Format…
However, I should know…
Is it some type of 6th tuning ????

f I remember correctly, there’s some kind of a piezo preamp that is used between the pickups output and the amplifier input that matches the in-and-out impedance…

Can't tell about the playability, but the first one seems to be a solidbody. Nice on stage (no feedback), but lacks the glorious acoustic tone - which, to me, is after all the point in resonator guitars.

The second one seems to have similar pickup system than my modded Regal - piezo and a mini-humbucker. For my money, it gives a lot of versatility (the mini-hb alone gives pretty good semiacoustic guitar sound, both blended together sound pretty nicely like an acoustic dobro) and is reasonably feedback-safe (although I am yet to try it with high power monitoring system).

Of course, the ultimate question is: Does that particular guitar feel good in your hands?

my son lives right outside of nashville and is going guitar hunting this weekend.... he plays so he will be able to tell the good from the mediocre.....

thanks for all of your responses...

Hi Again g8torcliff:

I have this link you might be interested in browsing…Bobby Seymore lives just north of Nashville…
I’m not sure if he deals with Resonator guitars, though…
However, he seems to know all the musicians that work in-and-around the style of music that would have steel and resonator guitar tracks. You might find it interesting to browse his pages for anything that might interest you…
He lives in Hendersonville TN…

Bill…

[EDIT]
I don’t think he’s open for buisness, on the weekends… Check his hours…

well…for my budget, it is going to be one of these three

this one

this one

or this one

questions are :
12 fret vs. 14th neck joint, which is better or does it matter

mahogony vs. spruce ??

thanx

Those links don’t seem to work for me.

Of the three I’d go for the third. Not for any good reason - just 'cause it looks cool. :)

well…i opted for the middle one…

i’m as excited as an 8 year old on christmas eve…

thanx for all your interest, you guys…these are pretty much all i can afford on my “hobby”…

For those who are interested, this chic is playing the exact resonator I just had delivered yesterday.
Isn’t she a beaut? (the guitar).
Sounds great!
I can’t wait to do a project with it.

She’s a purty thang. So is she.
