RIP Dimebag

how odd… John Lennon was shot Dec, 8 1980. 24 years ago to the day. ???

Yeah. I remember one time I was sitting with a friend watching tv. We were flipping through channels and briefly pass, like, the history channel or something and there is this lady on talking (we only heard like a second or less of it before I changed channels), and Charlie goes, “Hey! Go back! that was MDC’s wife!” Of course, I’m like, “Who?” and he says, “Mark David Chapman!” Yes. I am friends with people who abriviate the name of the John Lennon’s killer and recognize his wife when he sees her or hears her voice.

This kinda shit usually happens when you’re bone-ing someone’s ole-lady. If that’s the case he got what he deserved! I don’t care how famous you are!

No, I’m not bitter!

You got that right. Maybe the whole thing was staged & dimebag isn't really dead???

I cant even imagine for a second your serious. Same goes with the comments about metal being about violence. Playing with aggression and intensity is much different than going out and shooting someone. Its more akin to playing (american) football or something of that nature. I suggest you go buy a Pantera CD and sit and listen to it for a month or two.

But back on topic... Dimebag was an amazing writer of riffs, great lead player and a great entertainer on all levels... Ill miss his presence in the metal/rock community a lot.

RIP Darryl.

Tis a sad day when ANY entertainer is shot down while performing. I think we are all performers of sorts on this forum, so this should strike home pretty bad. What if you were on stage playing some tune and a dude with a gun came out n shot ya because he didn’t like yer music, or maybe didn’tlike the way you were playing it.

The Great Gig In The Sky, RIP Dime

dig does insane whammy bars with endless sustain!!! like his spirit to the guitar scene will sustain endlessly… my father and him died on the same day… same to you pa…

RIP Darrell+++

It’s a huge loss. Pantera was one of my biggest influences in the mid- 90’s when I started playing guitar. Greets to A.Marttala if you’re reading this…

It stuck me in the eye that somebody complained about security, when there was no metal detectors in the concert. I mean, who could anticipate that there’s some madman, wanting to kill D.D., coming to concert? Seriously, if (since) he really wanted to kill the guy, he would have done it no matter the level of security, metal detectors etc. Human mind is inventive. This applies to other ‘terrorists’ too but I don’t want to discuss this here…

This madman snuck in the back door. There are no metal detectors there usualy.

We need to find out what makes these people commit these senseless killings and try to prevent it from re-occurring, otherwise history will keep repeating itself.

Alright, I got some scoop this weekend. We had a gig and a few of our audience were actually there and I got this story from several folks. The shooter did not sneak in the back door. That is a "news folks got it sideways" supposedly. He paid his money at the front door like everyone else. As soon as he paid, he started sprinting towards the stage. A few of the bouncers were in pursuit to see what this guy was up to. He was on the stage within 15 seconds of getting in the door and started shooting. However, find me a concert venue with metal detectors. I have never seen one. Now I am sure they will be popping up all over.

The guy just got out of the marines and apparantly was pissed that Pantera broke up; supposedly his MO. There are differing stories around as to what they guy was like. An old boss says he was normal, other friends from a tattoo place he hung out at says he wasn't very stable and was the type likely to flip out like that. Who knows.

This is still all over the news here. I drove through the vigil the night after the shooting (can't get to Mickey Dees any other way. :) ) and it was a circus with news trucks and cops all over the place..

Yes & no. I was trying to make light of the situation with my "Elvis sittings" analogy.

However, I'm dead serious about the music & it's violent content! When you go singing songs about violence & killing people, etc., etc., it incites rage & emotion - that's why the music works because there's alot of angry young men around. And there are lot of loser, wacko's around that listen to this type of music. So my point is if you live by the sword, you die by the sword (sometimes).

My hero, John Lennon, sung about love & peace and he got gunned down too. He let his guard down. If John had stayed out of the lime light, he'd be alive today. Just like old "dimebag".

Mike

PS - I have nothing against the music. If you want to listen to it, that's your right. I'm just saying this violence comes with the territory.

I'm not a huge concert-goer, but when I attended a Prince conert in Vegas about three years ago, there was no metal detector for the main show (7,000 seat capacity), but for the smaller aftershow at the Studio 54 club, we were checked with a wand-type metal detector by one guy while two ushers stood to the side. That's why I even brought it up; I just assumed it was standard practice, at least for clubs and smaller venues where it's more practical.

But even if I did manage to ditch the wand guys and sprint up to the stage, the band wouldn't have been there--they didn't show for at least another hour, which, come to think of it, may have been more than just a fashion statement. That would have given security enough time to nab me. Closing the doors before the band took stage would have also made sense IMO, but I'm not sure they did.

This was why I blurted out the thing about metal detectors early on. On the surface it just sounded like the killer had it too easy, so I was a little upset. But yes, even metal detectors and ushers can't provide 100% security from nutcases. I hear the guy was big, so maybe even if they detected the gun, he still might have forced his way in and got lost in the crowd within seconds. Anyway, sorry if I came across as insensitive earlier--I was a little numbed at the time.

Tony

Nothing personal Scantee. It’s just that I always get irritated about the thought that we can just increase security levels if someone goes bananas and blows something up. That’s it, no-one needs to worry about WHY this guy might have blown something, instead everyone is put under suspicion and lots of resources get wasted on dealing with the resulting hype stating that more surveillance and militarist controlling of everything is needed. Well as I said, no security measures can ever beat human imagination. If somebody really wants to terrorize their fellow human beings, he most likely thinks he has a very good reason for this and he will go through the trouble to plan his act carefully and find the ways to accomplish it. Now this is where the resources should be spent, getting back to the roots of the problem and see what is behind it all. I’m not saying it’s easy, I’m just saying it…
I’m sorry, it’s a bit sensitive subject for me…

there was a reason that guy was released from the marines… ???

there was a reason that guy was released from the marines... ???

Actually, someone brought that up at work the other day - why is it that these crazed killer types always seem to be ex-marines?? (or maybe it's just ex-military) ???

Seems to be a pretty constant theme sometimes. Walter Mitty types perhaps?

Walter Mitty on PCP perhaps. However, this has been a discussion in the Iraq deal. There are statistics from the military on guys that come back and can’t turn off the war zone behavior. Supposedly now there is a couple month cool off period for guys coming back home to try to curb them from going home less than stable.

After Vietnam I don’t see anybody coming home from any war and not being altered psychologically. Most HANDLE it but none are clean of it. Alice’s Restaurant…I wanna kill,i wanna burn babies n mothers…
