Kewl. Yep. Contrary to popular belief, Eddie Van Halen didn’t “invent” fret board tapping.
Thanks for the thinks.
D – Likes him some goot Rock-a-Billy!
By the way KF, how do you come across this stuff?
D
The Tielman dude is not doing fretboard tapping, he is playing harmonics. Watch closely and you will see that the extended finger just touches the string at a vibratory node, and then he plucks the string with his thumb and then lifts the finger. Playing harmonics the way he is doing it is a standard classical guitar technique.

Hmmm… I believe you are right T. Still some great stuff though… makes want to get out some Setzer…
D
ALL RIGHT! You da’ man KF. Dat… is some awesome stuff. I dig The Brian Setzer Orchestra stuff man. Great stuff IMO.

And heres Doc and Jack playing the same tune Black Mountain Rag.
Oh, and while we are at it…
Really cool. The “Bye Bye Blues” sure reminds me of Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grapelli. This is the best Doc Watson stuff that I’ve ever heard. Nice thread guys.
T
I have a video tape somewhere of Doc and Merle with bass player sitting on stools and jammin’ away. I think it was a PBS special that I taped off the air. Anywho, that’s where I learned that Doc IS the KING of the flat-pickers. What a player!
D
PS Merle was tearin’ it up as well. Played some great bottleneck…
Alright…How’d this go from Rockabilly to Hillbilly?
Watson needed accompaniment and played it at half the speed! I put it up for sleepwalk anywho!
KF
Try this out - for really early rockabilly - with harmonics. The First Rockabilly?
Merle Travis isn’t much to look at, but he did a lot of stuff on the guitar that is still pretty tricky.
Or
First movie rockabilly?
T
Good golly! Merle Travis… if he were alive today (and in his prime) he would be THE guitar hero. Dude could play himself some wicked stuff man.
