Rogue Icon On XP Desk

Don Gaynor comes to the rescue on this issue for me… Poppa Willis…

Maybe it’ll (this utility will) work for the issue you point to…
????

on your machine…

I tried it Bill - you can’t delete something that it thinks doesn’t exist.
I tried it all, except for the one that is yet to work.

That’s a shame…

This little utility worked so well for that one shortcut… on this desktop…
I am about the have a go at the remainder, that are in that shortcut folder…
I hope that they all have similar issues…

Only thing that works for that PW is removing that item from your registry.
For some reason, probably an instance where part of or a history of the program was still in use when the attempted deleting took place.
Nose around in your reg and see if you see it there. If you do then google for more help.
You will have to find all the places of the registry that it's in and remove manually.
There is a registry search tool in regedit that could help.

pw,
what error message do you see and what os do you have?

it proved to be ‘shredder’ that worked great for me but the author’s site has been closed. maybe you can google for it. neat little app where you just d-n-d the offending icon/file/folder onto its window and zap it.

is the message, vista home premium 32 bit

pw,
i know it worked in xp pro. vista may well be an equine of a different complexion entirely.

Hi Again Gents:

I’m dropping the non-working icons one-at-a-time on this P-111 XP Home setup…
So Far I’ve observed that some of the applications need to be uninstalled …
then delete the icon using the Unlocker utility.;
then re-install the application and it appears so far to work and then I check to see what build and version of the application is installed
and all…
On one of the programs I discovered that a previous version …updating to a new version was the culpert…
e.g.
Installing a version update …
say v5-to-a-v6
Version five needs to be uninstalled before reinstalling version 6
… The operation left a inoperable icon on the desk… Some of the applications that I’ve repaire
so far didn’t recognize that a earlier version was installed…
Then not knowing this at update/build time
I now have two versions of the same application installed on the machine…
One application is
GoldWave…

If you notice n-Track…
at update time… Flavio forces the earlier build to uninstall…
then…
proceeds to update the build…
For example…
No icon issues like that for this program…
So-far…
that is…

Bill…

Anyway, I’m working away on this issue/fix…

bill,
sometimes its necessary to re-install a program before it can be totally un-installed with ‘add/remove programs.’ i use a freeware app called ‘perfect uninstaller’ and no longer have incomplete uninstalls. ‘add/remove programs’ is known to create problems such as you and pw are having :D .

However-and-when this happend… I have no idea…
BUT…
the Machine-and Operating System/Build survived it…

I think the machine is behaving better as a result of all this.
Time might tell…
The fault may have caused undue stress on the way the machine handled the application as they were being launched-and-used…
