Access Denied
Hi Gents:
I have a Rogue Icon on this P-111 XP machine’s Desk…
I am logged on with Administrator Rights… I’d like to delete this Icon that points to an application that I have and use on this machine…
The error pop-up screen appears when I try to access the application by using the shortcut that points to this utility…
ACCESS DENIED…
I’d like to delete this icon from the desk … I created a new shortcut to this utility and it works O.K.
However, this rogue icon with the pop-up screen tells me that the application may be in-use…
OR that the Disk in full…
Access denied…
Anyway to delete this icon… I am using administrator rights and all…
Bill…
Safe mode too? How about a selective startup?
I use this string to get some files that won’t behave to go bye bye.
attrib -r -s -h
You need to know exactly what the file name, it’s location then run this.
For example the shortcut name is N-Track, the file name is N-Track.lnk
You would from the command prompt type this in
attrib -r -s -h C:\Documents and Settings\Paco\Desktop\N-Track.lnk
What does this do? It removes any attributes that might stop the file from being deleted
Then you can go to the file on the desktop and simply delete it.
-------------------------------------------------------
From web page I found,
A shortcut file is a pointer to an .EXE file somewhere on your system. When you click on the shortcut it’s like clicking on the .EXE file and the associated program should start and run. Sometimes .LNK files will stop working. This can be because the underlying .EXE association has been broken by something (often by some form of anti-malware program improperly changing the registry) or the association in the registry can be come corrupted. The other problem generally asserts itself when all shortcuts seem to open the same program. You may be able to fix this by opening the registry editor and looking in the key entry [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.lnk] where you might see @=“lnk_auto_file”. If you see that, change the value to @=“lnkfile” and all should work again after a system restart. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if someone sends you a file with this extension.

I’ll try to do the EDIT in Safe Mode… That never occurred to me to open the Desk in Safe Mode… Thanks… I’ll report back here if it works… Thanks Levi…
Bill…
Depends on what the icon is pointing to. Some are system icons that get replaced is missing. What’s it point to?
I'll try to do the EDIT in Safe Mode..
That never occurred to me to open the Desk in Safe Mode..
Thanks..
I'll report back here
if it works..
Thanks
Levi..
Bill..
Hope that helps I hate that kind of problem.
You might have to do a little nip and tuck in your registry before all is said and done. Good Luck
Speaking of icons that won’t go away, try this on a buddy,
When he/her is away from the desk, simply hit the “Print Screen Button”, open a paint program and paste, then save the file as a .bmp or .jpg and apply as the “desktop background”. Now you have 2 of everything…LOL

I’m working on this YeT…
I’ll go back in there with an exacto knfe and take it’s little toe…
If it hollers
I would say I got… If it takes mine
I’ll say it got me…
I tried the safe mode…
NO-GO…
Thanks for pointing me to the registry location…
I’ll have a look in there for the entry…
I’ll back up the registry
before I do anything…
and place the file on the desktop…
How it got to look like it does, is beyond my imagination…
I use that application to edit starts-and-stops on 16-bit wave files…
AND… nameing /renaming tracks and…
and…
I logged on as an administrator
but NO-GO…
That icon has to be pointing on to some other place on these drives…
When I do a properties on the icon…
everything is all GRAY’d out…
I don’t know what that is all about…
The icon don’t look like any other icon on the desktop…
?
Bill…
Back Again:
Nothing yet…
so-far…
I don’t think I know enough about the command prompt directive to search this out… I tried…
but…
no luck… I went into the registry…
However, I didn’t see anythiong in that folder that looked like you said I should see…
When I opened the desk up in Safe Mode
I didn’t see all the icons there… I think it has to-do with the screen res…
Anyway, only about half of the icons were present…
or viewable…
Not the one I went looking for…
anyway…
I need an IcOn
eraser…
Does anyone got one-o-dem…
Bill…
This is a known problem Bill - sometimes icons get “stuck” I have one on my desktop from an erased doc file from last year. I found the solution on the net one day but forgot to run the work around for it. Do a net search and you’ll find it.

Right, they will probably have you remove some from the registry.
Google big guy for specific instructions.
Do a search on c:\ for “PolderbitS Sound Editor” and check to see if you have any files or folders with this name on your system. If so delete them.
Then go into the registry and search the reg for “PolderbitS” Remove all entries of this including any sub folders this name has. You should find the .lnk file which links to your file on your desktop.
Clean out your c:\windows emp folder.
Clean out your C:\Documents and Settings\Paco\Local Settings emp folder.
From any directory select the “tools” icon from the top, goto “folder options” then goto “file types”, scroll through the list and make sure “PolderbitS Sound Editor” is not a registered file type, if so delete it from the list. This will unlink it from any association it might have.

BILL - create a NEW FOLDER on your desktop - call it anything you want - when the folder icon appears DRAG the rogue icon into it - that way its out ofd harms way and you can use the new shortcut -
M.R.
bill,
search for ‘file shredder’ i think its simply called ‘shredder’ and install it. when you open it you should be able to drag-n-drop the rogue icon into it a presto!
bill,
here is another possible solution.

Hi Gents:
The application’s shortcut, along with a number of other Launch Icons are/were placed in a folder That’s called “Unused Desktop Icons”
It was created by Windows XP for placing seldom used programs…
Every-so-often Windows launches this utility to clear the desktop of shortcuts to applications that are not in the Mainstream Of Activity…
However, when I searched in that folder that day I found severall icons that had the same appearence…
This icon is amongest several…
I only tried to launch this one application…
It’s quite possible that all the other icon’s shortcuts will behave the same way…
This may have happened as a result of me trying to get this LAN up-and-running…
Who knows
?
Anyway I’ll try all your approaches to this issue
and maybe come up with a FIX…
So far, anything I tried has resulted in NO- Action…
If I could go into the registry and find where the Icon Shortcuts are enter’d… I’d go there and do-the-deed…
I believe the registry removal looks like the answer to this headache… I’ll attempt a registry search for PolderbitS…
and see
what shows up…
Take two a**burns and call me in the mornin’…
Said The Doc…
Well…
Today… it’s back to work…
We were spared yet another bunch of weather…
There’s only a dusting of the StUFF on the ground…
However, the forcast is calling for yet…
another weather day tomorrow…
We’ll see…
Bill…
Hey Bill. I use this great little freebie program to remove any stubborn files or shortcuts.MOVE ON BOOT Once installed, you can right clik on the offending item, and select Delete Files on Next Startup, and lo and behold, it’ll go away. Or at least, in my experience, it’s never come across a file it couldn’t nuke yet! Let us know how you get on!
Hi Don and n-Trackers:
I don't know where the rogue icon is..
BUT, I downloaded the Unlocker Utility and installed it..
Poof..
It's not on the Desktop anymore..
This utility is only a couple of hundres of kbs. in size.. It didn't even look like it was gonna (do anything) work..
The icon of it (the utility) is on the Toolbar down by the clock.. I clicked on the Unlocker icon..
Then,
I clicked on the rogue icon and tried to delete it like before..
Then no pop-up screen..
The (Unlocker) pop-up screen asked me what I wanted to-do with the Rogue Icon..
The choice I gave the pop-up screen was 'Delete The Icon"..
I did the click and "Now It's Not On the Desktop"..
I have a couple more icons to check.... AND..
we'll see what happens with them.. There are a few more Icons in the Unused icon folder..
Thank You Don Gaynor
for the link to this utility..

How easy was that

Well..
We'll see..
Thanks ALL..
Bill..
[EDIT]
I want to show you the issues that developed with this PITA Icon failure..

On the taskbar you'll see the Unlocker Application Icon.. Then, you'll see that the Polderbits Icon is not on the desktop.. Then after opening the Unused Icon shortcut Folder you'll see a number of other icons that has No-Images next to the shortcuts.. Those happen to be shortcuts that don't point to their respective Applications.. BUT... you'll see the Unlocker Popup Screen asking for a command..
Anyway, I believe that all these icons don't point to anywhere.. This issue happened as the result of a LAN install issue that doesn't work yet..
Still working on this..
there’s my stubborn icon message - I have found nothing to delete it cause it doesn’t exist.
None of the ‘fixes’ work either. I try to move it, doesn’t exist. Rename it, doesn’t exist.
