Best kept secret?
I’ve just picked up a pair of used SM48 mics on ebay.
£20 for the two (that’s 33USD according to xe.com).
I can’t resist a bargain.
Perhaps I’ve led a sheltered life but I’ve never really noticed these mics before.
These mics look very similar to SM58s and recorded side by side I’m not sure I could tell the difference.
(Actually the 48 does seem to be very slightly clearer but that could be my imagination).
So these two go into my box of knock-about bits and loaners, and one of my two 58s is going on to ebay to add to my “MOTU fund”.
Just sharing…
Cool. I’ll give you twenty quid for one;-)
Good for you Mark A…

That sounds like me…
There’s a saying…
I don’t know who said it…
but…
Hording money doesn’t help the economy… or something like that…
Bill…

No!
Never ever get rid of your 58's and 57's. They're not the best, they ain't super-cool, and they ain't a lot of stuff; but with a bucket-load of them, you'll always be the great sound guy who can handle anything.

Hi Mark A:
I sort of agree with EZee, partially… that is… But, money being as tight as it is, these days, we all have to sacrifice to some degree, for the Good-of-the-Cause…
However, I’ve seen it happen so many times… For example… The guy sells his PA equipment to buy a Bass Amp… only to buy the Bass Amp back because he’s the bass player in the new group he is organizing…
Music stores just loves that kind of guy… 57’s and 58’s cost more than they’re worth at the new level… and too much at the used level, as well… If you have a pair of each, it’s awful tough to let them go… for whatever reason…
I know, I think… What comes first ? the apple or the seed
?
When the mind has decided, never look back…
Bill…
Well, the 58 is sold. But I have another one and a 58 Beta that I’ve had for ages. I also now have the two 48s and a couple of other cheapish dynamic mics I’ve collected over the years.
I’ve decided to try to raise enough money to get a Tascam US-1641 (
£330 new) or maybe a 2nd hand MOTU 828. I’m half-way to the Tascam but I’m running out of stuff to sell! Trying not to part with a guitar but I might have to.
LOL

On second thoughts, I withdraw my post. You're right Bill, and I was wrong.
Life ain't easy, especially now, and I'm glad to see that the OP followed your advice and not mine.
