Stories for Yaz

Hey Bruffie,

Glad you found the song idea interesting.

Having a long lead- in instrumental suits me fine. So then structure would be:

Intro
Instrumental break over the regular chord structure for the verse
Verse
Short break (the part where my timing is bad now)
Verse
Short break (the part where my timing is bad now)
Not sure what to do here
Verse
Instrumental Outro (Doesn’t exist yet. Yaz?)

Bruffie, what if you wrote two new verses, and we did the two existing verses with the blues feel but then switched gears for the next two verses and did them (with you singing) in the Ian Anderson style. Would that be interesting or dumb? Don’t expect much from the keyboard part except for straight rhythm and bass line. I’m a three finger artist on the keyboard.

Yaz, if you want to build the “Not sure” section from the ground (chords and all) just tell me how many measures of space to leave for you.
T

Maybe Bruffie can work in a chorus on the “short break”, may or may not sound cool.

Guys,

I have some ideas for a 3rd and 4th verse so you can structure the song around 3 or 4 verses if you want.

I am moving house today so I might be off-line for 3-4 days. But have no fear…I’ll be back!

Cheers,
Ian

Eyup!

You finally moving into the Burj?

Steve

OK Yaz and Bruffie, and anyone else interested:

I have the backbone of the song recorded about as well as I can do it, so it is ready for you to add parts. You can listen to an MP3 of the backbone Here. Navigate to the music page and listen to YazzBruff. The MP3 has the keyboard parts (kept pretty simple), updated drums and vocals. There are now four verses. The last two include one verse with lyrics that I wrote, and a repeat of one the lyrics that Bruffie wrote. The intent of putting these in is to illustrate the structure of the song. What I had in mind was that Bruffie could delete the last two verses of vocals that I recorded and replace them with the two that he will record. Actually there are five verses if you count the guitar intro. My intention with recording the intro is that Yaz would replace it with his version. There are at least four “break-like” or “chorus-like” sections that can contain eithe vocal or instrumental elements – whatever anybody dreams up. I think that it would be cool to hear what different folks could come up with. Maybe we’ll get some ideas from other folks.

When it gets time to record, you will want to download some wave files from mediafire.com.

Drums
Piano
Vocal
MP3 of the backbone

Be forewarned that each part is a wave file that is almost 90 MB in size. If you have trouble with such large downloads, we can try to arrange another means of getting files to you. If you import each wave file into N-track and put each at the start of a track they should all be synchronized. When you get a part recorded, simply render your part and send it back to me, and I’ll put it together with the other parts. By the way the wave files are 44.1 kHz, 24 bit. Be sure to set the tempo in your project to XXX beats per minute. Rats – cant remember the tempo. I’ll post that later.

Anyway, let me know what you think of the current status of the song and any ideas you might have.

Long liver N-track, and Reaper and all the other great software we have for doing music.

Tempo of the backbone recording is 70 beats per minute.

Hi T, downloaded this am, will try a few tracks, sounds good!

Yaz

Trying a link here, Bass track.

Bass Track

Nice job on the bass track Yaz! Here is the song with the bass mixed in. EQ on bass guitars is tricky, and the sound is dependent on a zillion things, including the monitors and the room where the monitors are located. How does this sound to you?

New Mix.

T

Here’s a couple guitar tracks, mono files. Rhythm parts. Dry recorded no eq or effects.

Guitar 1

Guitar 2

Sounds good T! Bass is tricky.

Yaz,those tracks were outstanding. I tried putting a little compression and reverb, and fiddled with EQ, but finally decided that they sounded best just as I received them from you. They mix really sweetly with the other stuff. I like the harmonics at the beginning and the harmonies and the overall sound. It’s hard for me to fairly judge music when I’m involved in creating it, but to my ear, this is getting to be very nice. This is what it sounds like at this point:

New Mix 2

Keep it coming Yaz. Ya got any juice left after those rhythm tracks?

I wonder if we can find a drummer to do a real drum track? Yo, N-trackers…

Can’t wait to hear what Bruffie does to replace some of the vocals.

Any N-trackers out there willing to venture any opinions or suggestions at this point?

T

Dang T, you’re fast, LOL. :agree:

Recorded those guitar tracks with “Tracee” my Les Paul Special w/P90’s.
Will get “Lucy” (Les Paul Studio) down tomorrow and try a lead, would like to hear the final vocals first, but can change anything to fit.

Anybody heard from Bruffie? Hope he got moved ok.

Here ya go T, lead track (needs some work) and a stab at a mix. The mix may stink, getting tired ears.
Anyways let me know what you think. Any word from Bruffie?

Carolina playing the Colts, check back after the game and Race in Atlanta! :agree:

Yaz,

I got stuck in ‘honey do’. Music time has suddenly become more limited as wife has noticed that I’m not performing usual tasks.

First impressions: Your mix sounds fine to me. Actually, I noticed the bass guitar fade-in and spatial arrangement of parts as the main difference between your mix and mine. On my playback system, EQ sounded very similar. Probably you have improved the mix substantially and I am just too dead-eared to hear it.

Some solid guitar playing in that track. I like the guitar work starting from the first short break. Intro is not as strong as the rest, or maybe I’m being influenced by my natural tendency to hear the part in my head that I played originally. Who knows? Still, if you still want to mess with parts that would be my suggested focus. Perhaps just wait until Bruffie rejoins the project to see where he takes it?

T

Hi T, “Honey Do’s” oh yes, got my list here somewhere, oops, think I threw it in trash can, LOL!
Oh well I like sleeping in dog house hehehe.

I think my mix sucks, my ears were too tired when I tried it. The guitar intro you did is much better than mine, You should put it up for download. The only one I have of it is the first mix you posted. Maybe put yours back in so I can back it with something. A little harmony maybe.

Yo Bruffie, ya got moved yet?

Yaz

Hi Yaz, T and Bruffie…

I hope you guys don’t mind but I threw a little 60’s, 70’s “hippie” sounding stuff on your track. There’s a few snips and riffs mixed in here. If you want the files or want me to wank a little more… just lemme know. I didn’t burn a lot of time on it but it seemed to beg for that “Who” ring modulator thing… :)

It’s the one called “Yaz” of course. When you guys have scoped it out, I’ll yank it off the Motagator site.

D

EDIT: BTW… COOL SONG DUDES! :D

Yaz,

I pulled both your mix and my mix into the same project so that I could use soloing to flip back and forth between the two mixes. I gotta say if your mix sucks then so does mine, cause they are very similar. Somehow you managed to get your overall levels a little higher than mine, and the bass guitar in my mix has more lows. Other than that, there seems to be very little difference to me. I worked like the devil to smooth the bass out (not because of your playing, just because of the sound I was trying to get) - I think that I have two compressors (a multiband and a transient killer) and a limiter stackedin yhr dihnsl chain for the bass, and I STILL had to go in and manually edit the volume envelope in many places to prevent clipping to get the level I wanted. Still your mix was substantially louder than mine. How did you do that without getting clipping? Are you using a limiter on your master track?

Here is the intro track that you don’t have: Intro wave file

Hey Diogenes,

Come on and join in. Ring modulation! Heehee… That’s a pretty cool idea. I have no idea how we’ll fit everything together but the more the merrier. Maybe we can have a couple of alternative versions. Yaz’s musical Frankenstein? Whadda ya think Yaz?

All the individual instrument and vocal parts are posted if you track back in the thread.

It is really quite interesting to hear the different takes that people have on a song. Bruffie has a Jethro Tull style thing in mind for vocals on some verses.

Hi T and Diogenes. First off, jump on in here D, more ideas the merrier!

T, I used a little compression on each track to get the volume up, rolled off 100hz on everything but drums, the bass is a pain, straight into the board, plus my bass playing is weak at best. LOL Thanks for posting the intro track, will play around with it.

Different ideas on a song are cool to hear, D will come up with cool stuff, T already has, now waiting to hear Bruffie ideas. Can ya see the big GRIN on my face?
:agree:

Edit, Mediafire is having problems this morning, or I’m having problems, will try later for the intro file.
