Hey guys,
After having the chance to play a double bass for the first time ever at a local gig, where I managed to fumble around and find the bass line to fever, accompanied by what was probably the most sext vocal I have ever achieved in my life… I have found myself desperate to get a double bass!
…but it turns out that having one of those little bundles of joy that I have recently acquired empties your bank account almost a quickly as they fill your time!
so? I came across these…
…and figured this may just fill a little of the bass sized hole in my life! you guys seen, heard or played 'em before?
Anyhoozle, this got me thinking, It could be cool to ask you guys about any other ‘home made instruments’ you’ve ever come across…or even ones you’ve made yourselves?

Don’t set me off - I destroyed an original Stylophone and a perfectly good reed organ in an attempt to merge them into a synth when I was around 14:-)
Go for it, Ange. You ever plucked a cello - pick 'em up cheap.
We call that a “washtub bass” – b/c we make them out of old washtubs. Made one in high school.

I also like the term “gutbucket.”
Tony, you remind me of my brother, he once borrowed my stereo and returned it in 4 different parts having tried and failed to put it back together gain, I was gutted!
“gutbucket” ha! I like that too! I guess that the sound differs somewhat using a washtub as it is metal and not wooden
I’m really very tempted to make one though as Rob says I have to get my new guitar as a priority before I can spend out on a double bass. (hard life eh?) Only thing is, you can get a double bass for 3-400 but the kinda guitar I want next is gonna be considerably more! on that note…
If you were gonna have just 1 guitar, to last you a lifetime…the ultimate acoustic…(and if you were me) what would you have? Do I go Martin? Taylor? I have plenty of time to think about it as there is no budget yet (i’m starting the big save now) but I have no guitar of my own now and can’t use rob’s forever ideas?
I love the Taylors. Martins always sound a bit tubby in the low end to me. But that’s just a generalization. You know the perfect guitar when you play it.
I found a guy on the web who makes teachest basses out of big pails used for concrete. Now I can’t find it!!! He’s in your neck of the woods.
I love the Taylors.

Yup, that was the rout I was headed down myself

I’ve only played one Martin and it was, indeed, tubby. Treat your self to a trip out to a BIG shop where you can get hands-on? The journey home with your new Guit will feel amazing:-)
My daughter says we need the model that Taylor Swift plays. The sparkly one.
That’s not a helpful answer, is it?
I would never get an acoustic/electric, FWIW. I want a dreadnought.

Since we are not worrying about how we will pay for it AND actually feed the children:

I love Taylors too. I want to say 110 for the model. Not sure. It's wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. It sings. It plays itself. Beautiful guitar.
Chose it from at least 50 in the music shop in Ringwood (which isn't too far from you Ange I think). Can't remember the name of the shop though. Brain fade. But they have two shops in the same street - one for electrics and amps and stuff and the other... just acoustics.
Found it. http://www.taylorguitars.com/Guitars/100-200/100/110/ Pretty much entry level. Maybe I just got lucky.

I love Taylors but all things being equal I’d probably go for the
Gibson J-45 Standard
Yeah, that would be good, too.
Oh my, she is rather pretty

Thanks for the links...just googled that address, that's only a few hours away from us...I see a road trip coming up!
…just googled that Gibson too… ‘GULP’ think i’d better start saving! (the kids don’t have to have christmas or birthday presents, right?! )
I’ve found that the little ones don’t need presents, they just need lots of paper and ribbons and boxes to play in. Of course, once they hit 2 or so…
