The Journey Through

So much good music gets posted here, and with a regularity that I envy in the case of TomS and JDET. (As far as Craig and Ange are concerned, I want free tickets when they make it to Nashville.) Anyway, instead of all the work I should have been doing around here yesterday, I put my time and energy into this.

The Journey Through

hey kev,

listening through, i found myself waiting for and anticipating the section where everything kicks into full-on rock. it never came. then i thought, i like that it never happened. i like the tease all the way through, small build-up sections, the “is he or isn’t he?” feeling. i like songs that are on the unpredictable side, not formulaic. not doing what is expected is just as great as doing what isn’t expected, just a little more subtle and mature.
lots of tasty bits throughout that i really enjoyed.

This a really good soundscape, tone poem, very visual to me. Good mix of accoustic and effects. The bass is way cool, good example of the bass holding the sound together, leading things along without getting all the attention.

IS THAT A COWBELL in there?!?!?! YEAH! COWBELLS UP! :agree:

Add to my instrumental station!

and by the way, you should slack off the work more often if this is what it gets you.

How many times I have to ask you guys to post LYRICS? Sheesh…
Oh … NEVERMIND…

Really creative Kevin - free as a bird - love it!

Nashville…ha…I wish…

I can never usually bring myself to listen to instrumentals all the way through, but this one I did. It held me there. Nice piece well done!
Just cuts off at the end there a little quick, but really good. Nice eq etc.

Art!

Love the guitar work Kevin! Great composition.

Mark Knopler meets Tangerine Dream! I love it!

Niiiiccceee Kev! :agree:

D

Thanks for the very kind comments. I may do some minor adjustments in the mix, but overall I’m satisfied with it.

The recording was based on three short chord progressions I had been playing together on my acoustic, and never really thought of taking it beyond that. Trying to take it where you might have would be well outside my comfort zone. I’m much more competent on acoustic guitar. On electic, I tend to just jam, though I’m trying to expand what I can do.

I’ve always been such a perfectionist when it comes to lyrics, that I have to be truly inspired to finish anything I start. Over the past few years, the only lyric-based songs I’ve written involved modifiying someone else’s lyrics to fit the musical direction I wanted to take them, maybe adding a few lines of my own. I do want to find my “lyrical voice” again though.

Among the ego-swelling compliments I’ve gotten over the years, this one is a doozy.

For better or worse, it doesn’t take much to get me to “slack off the work”. I am glad I got around to getting the bird nest out of my chimney last weekend though. I really did need the heat turned on.

Sounds cool Kevin. But here again the drums aren't breathing. No life to them. Especially the intro. That's boring and taking away from everything else. Redo it! Take a couple of days to very the volume on all the hits. As if the drumer is looking out the window or scratching his nose at times. You have touch and class and dynamics on everything else. Why not on the drums? I know why, because I used to do the same thing. But I'm not telling you because I want you to like me not hate me  But maybe you can tell me!

Thanks for the critique, Levi. It would take at least a couple of days work for me to make a worthwhile difference on the drums. I considered leaving them out altogether, but it just didn't sound right. I have the Drum Trax Midi Library I bought three or four years ago, so I usually import a drum file from it with a similar tempo and style to what I'm trying to do. (The ability to audition tracks in n-track would be a wonderful addition to its already long list of features.) If I can find sections that seem to work with the recording, I'll use them, with only a minimum of editing. Not being a drummer, I usually don't have a set idea of what I'm looking for. I've listened to recordings to hear how drums fit within various mixes, and feel like I'm making at least a little progress on that front. I should probably spend some time listening to what drummers are doing, beyond just the basic groove. Re-doing the drums on this is a definite possibility, but I'll have to "hear" how I want them to sound first. And if I hated everyone who pointed out my flaws, I certainly wouldn't have many friends. Not any good ones, anyway.
