Although I primarily now use an ADAT HD24 to track, I still have my Hoontech C-Port 24 bit 10X10 card w/ breakout box. Its the same envy24 chip as Delta, Terratec and others, worth a look see for those looking for a 24/96 card with direct outs on every channel and S/PDIF.

I’d just be using that for I/O with a mixer- so maybe this is ideal. I have apps I like, and will probably be able to keep it for a good while. As long as I can record and mix I’m fine!
Not doing any MIDI either, I’ll just be using it as if it were any other multitracker/in-the-box mixing software. I did see one on ebay- but I think they’re still asking too much for it, in light of it’s status as no longer commercially viable…

I'll put a vote in for the Terratec EWS88MT. I got it off ebay about a year ago for about $175US and just saw one go by for about the same price on ebay last week. It's a discontined card/breakout box, but there is an XP Asio driver buried on Terratec's webpage (google it). it has 8 analog in/ 8 analog out with a breakout box (with 16 RCA jacks) that can mount in a 5 1/4 bay or be external. It does 24bit/96K with very little latency. I'm a very happy camper with it... Paul |
I’ve got a hercules 16/12 fw. Lots of inputs, but the monitoring is dodgey (only 2 inputs at a time in real time unless you use ASIO+Live) so it’s best used with a mixer.
You can only monitor 2 of the 12 inputs while recording? Hmmm… But you can monitor from inside the software, right? I assume yes.
I saw that written up a while back, looked pretty good.

I’ll probably go another route then, as I’m doing everything “in the box” as of now, anyway. Heh- I don’t even know whatI’m doing right now!
Thanks for the note, though.

Hey Van, What are you running for a system? Got your specs handy? Mainboard, chipset (Northbridge and Southbridge… if you know), PCI specification? Does this card need a 5v power supply at the PCI port? I’m running XP, AMD Athlon 3200+, VIA chipset (KT600). I’ve found this card, and it looks cool. I’ll go get it if I can be relatively sure it’ll work in my newer machine. Thanks! |
Hey there, just to kick in my .02$,
I just picked up an ESI ESP1010. It’s kinda the same idea as the delta 1010 (not LT) as it’s external breakout box, with PCI interface.
I checked specs against the 1010, and the ESI has better converter specs, and it also has 2 preamps added for input 1 & 2. They can also be used as line in, like the other 6.
It also has a software proggie that will route any sounds inside yer PC to another sound program, so you can route signal internally. New technology, that. Built by ESI.
I got mine for 299$ through djdeals.com
The latency has been posted on other sites as under 1ms, I can send you the linky, if interested.
[quote=woxnerw,Feb. 05 2006,11:04]Hi n-Trackers:
I found that link to that 8-I/O hardware… I haven’t seen much talk and reviews on this stuff but from what I can gather on this hardware . it looks pretty interesting to me…
http://www.tracertek.com/esp1010.htm
It doesn’t look as though '98SE desks will support the drivers… That may-or-may not be important… as well, the In-and-Outs cannot be balanced…
In some ways the hardware attracted my attention cause it’s not talked about very much and it might be an alturnitive to the Hi-End stuff… and Middle-of-the-Road, Hype’d… Hardware…
Bill…
That’s the hardware guys… Dollar-for-Feature… They have a 1-800 number… There is none of that stuff sold locally, here… as far as I know… If there was any hardware I would upgrade to… It would be this stuff… I can’t see anything else for the investment…
Where is York, PA. anyway… ??
Bill…

Hey Sloom, I'm currently at work. So I don't have all the specs handy. But what I have the EWS88MT card in is the HP 1250 model of computer. It has an AMD64 dual core (3800 I believe), XP Media Centre Edition, 1Gb RAM, 250Gb SATA HDD (need to get a second HDD, but my bookkeeper wife says wait). When I get home, I'll check the chipset (Intel, if I remember correctly). No it does not need any extra power at the PCI port - just plug er' in. I was using it in an IBM Netvista 1Ghz PIII, but found that I didn't have the horsepower to record 8 tracks at a time at the 24 bit/96k. So I went out and bought the above unit, and have been very happy since. Paul |

There’s a review of that ESP1010 that Bill is suggesting at ESI ESP1010 Review
It does look interesting. Splitting the inputs (1-4 in front, 5-8 in back) would be a pain to setup IMO (one reason I like my EWS88MT).
Sloom, I’ll get those specs shortly.
Paul
Cool… I’m hanging around, checking in every once in a while. A’right…
Edit: That is a very favorable review for the ESI box.
Specs: VIA VT6307 chipset, MSI Amethyst-M mobo, AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ processor, model HP Pavillion 061 (EG194AA-ABA A1250N). I bought it new first week in Nov 05, but don’t know exactly how old the mainboard is and I’m still trying to find the PCI specs. I’ll log into an HP site (for techs) in a moment and see if I can get more details.
Paul
manufacture date is Oct 29/05. Still can’t find PCI specs.
This is so far so good, mang. Sounds like you must have the newer PCI thing (voltage) in there. Over at Virtual Dr (.com) I was told the PC protocol (or whatever this is!) has been the same for years. So I hope I’m not sending you off on a wild PCI-chase…
But I was told by tech support at MOTU…
Still I think there must be validity to it. But I’m believing I will go and nail that Terratec. I’ll check back before I do, though.
Thanks for your time and trouble, Paul!
I’ve logged on to HP’s site for channel partners (CSN - I deal with them everyday) and got nothing. I tried a few system info utilities and they only come up with standard PCI stuff. But I don’t think you will regret getting the EWS88MT. If you plan on using the breakout box externally, be sure the one on ebay has both cables (mine only came with the internal cable, but I’m fine with that). I will try and dig up that XP driver link for it (found it on google) because it is buried in Terratec’s webpage. Good luck with the bidding.
Paul
