free upgrade from v4 to v5?

so i got an email from flavio saying that if i have ntrack v4 i can upgrade to v5 for free in september when its released. i orginally thought that he’d make us pay for an upgrade, but it looks like thats not the case. awesome!

I read it slightly differently. I think you have to buy (or upgrade) to V4 from now and then you’ll get V5 when it’s released.

I’ve had a registered copy of n-track for just 3 months now, and though it crashes from time to time I didn’t worry as I’d noticed there were regular bugfixes. If we don’t get a free upgrade to v5, will there be bugfixes for the older versions still?

hmm confusing… i guess we’ll find out when it gets released…

i doubt flavio will keep working on v4. it would be a total pain in the ass to fix code for v5 and then have to go back to v4 when you’re already working the newer version. plus there hasn’t been an update to v4 in months, most likely because he’s working on v5.

I interpreted this to mean that you have to be a registered v4 user to upgrade for free to v5. So he’s giving all the v3.3 holdouts an incentive to upgrade before v5 comes out (which could mean the price will go up after that).

I don’t think he means that only the newest v4 purchasers get the free upgrade.

At least I HOPE that’s not what he means. I bought v4 more than a year ago…it would suck to miss out because I bought it too soon!

Perhaps Flavio himself will weigh in and clarify?

PR ???

Since n-Track Studio 5.x will be released on September,
users who purchase version 4.x now, or upgrade from an earlier version
to v4.x, will be able to upgrade for FREE to version 5.0 (and all
subsequent 5.x versions) as soon as it will be released.

Well I think it’s fairly clear - and matches the model that he used from V2 to V3 and V3 to V4 updates.

"users who purchase version 4.x now, or upgrade from an earlier version

It is ambiguous as worded. It does not specifcally address those who have previously purchased v.4.

I will try v.5 if it is free. v.4 is a nightmare for me. Problems with every build.

Last workable version I tried is 3.3.

Ya that email lacks alot of info, it’s not cut and dry, what’s the incentive? It is ambiguous to me aswell.

Sure it says that if you have v4 or upgrade to v4, v5 is will be free but it doesn’t say when the offer expires and there’s no detail concerning savings.

As I read it, it does not say that if you have v.4 it will be free, only that if you upgrade to v.4 or purchace v.4 will it be free. What it really means ( as I said before ) is ambiguous.

You are right Jeff, it does sound more like if you upgrade now or purchase now it will be free. I just percieved the email to be fair which it may not.

I will tell you one thing, if that's the rules, I will be switching to Cakewalk.

I really think what's going to happen though is anyone who has v4 or upgrades to v4 prior to the release will get v5 for free. at least I hope so.

I really don’t understand the problem with that Stu. If you’ve bought, and been using, V4 for a while then you have to pay the (very reasonable) $29 to upgrade to V5. I don’t think Flavio should be oblidged to give V4 folks a free V5 upgrade.

However, because Flavio doesn’t want to prevent people registering now (ie waiting for V5 to arrive) he’s effectively offering them a V5 licence now - but they have to use V4 in the meantime. Seems pretty fair ?????

This is the model he’s used on the V3 and V4 upgrade.

To me it’s a rip off, to me it says all you fellas that held out on version 4 here’s a reward and all you fellas that upgraded to version 4 and kept me aware of the issues, go %^&* yourselves, you’lll have to pay me a third time. It also hints of concern that 5 might be a money loser, why a pre-release incentive. perhaps he feels he may lose customers because alot of people weren’t to happy with 4.

Anyway it’s the cost of doing business. I honestly think this may turn some people away.

EDIT) actually I cooled down a bit…it’s not that big of a deal.
v4 is running well for me …I’ll have to hold out on v5 unless it really can stand on it’s head and wait for the special offer for v6 so I can save 29 bucks and not go through the grief of crashes

If you’ve registered n-Track Studio after the 11th of February 2004
the upgrade to all 4.x versions is free.

So if you’ve bought 3.3 after the date mentioned above, you may now update to 4.x version for free. And from that you’ll get 5.x for free.

I’d interpret it in a way every one that has bought a 3 or 4 version after 11th Feb 2004 will get 5 free.

That throws a real wrench into it. A beautifully written piece.

Who knows probably getting worked up over nothing.

Well, I purchased ntrack on the 1/7/06, and at that time it had the “buy now free upgrade to all v5 releases” thing on the web page at that time, which would seem to be at odds with the,

users who purchase version 4.x now

from the Email. I wouldn’t have purchased ntrack at that time if it weren’t for the free upgrade offer. But I think I will be able to get the free upgrade, doesn’t really matter to me though, as I’ll most likely be completely migrated over to Linux by then.

Well that e-mail is indeed very clear. So no 5 vs for me thank you.

What, you guys won’t shell out 29 USA dollars for a program that does what you couldn’t have done 10 years ago short of about 500,000 clams? I bet some of us spent more than 29 bucks on beer last week.
