Well, since late adopters get a break, I’ll be postponing my purchase of V5. I purchased V4 early but due to issues at the time I’m still running V3. Next time I won’t make that mistake: I’ll run V5 as demo only until I’m sure I want to switch.
It’s basically a $30 maintenance fee every other year, which isn’t so terrible. Unfortunately, each version comes with significant bloat I’m not interested in (e.g., .NET). However, sooner or later I’ll break under the weight of a few bug fixes I’d like and some really nice new features (like freeze – which when I used it early on froze the wrong thing: my computer).
OK, well, that’s pretty clear. Thanks for posting that, g8tor.
I’m one of those for whom v4 has been very stable and workable, so I guess I’ll wait and see what’s new-and-improved in v5 before I make a decision.

Once I sorted out the net issues, v4 has killed for me.
I am definitely going to switch to Pro Tools just as soon as I need to. I suspect that will be never.
Different companies approach this different ways. Some companies heavily discount the current version a couple of months before a new release. In fact I have seen Windows XP HOme as low as $49 AR since Vista has been announced. But do you think if you bought Windows XP now at full price, MS would give you a free copy of Vista.? No way.
Flavio is using the method of allowing people who have bought V4 since V5 announced a free upgrade. That way they don’t scream about being misled into buying an old version.
This is not a new practice. If you bought V4 last year, then you have gotten a years worth of use out of it. Flavio will pro rate that for you by allowing a lower price for the upgrade, but if you have only gotten a month or two out of it, you get if free.
Even if he discounted it the last couple of months, people would still complain that they are getting ripped off so it is a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation.

I still use v 3.3. I might switch one day. Price is not an issue. I just like the stability I have now and I don’t record anything that I would really need much more than I have now. Like I said, maybe someday I will move up but right now I don’t see a need.
I only posted what FA sent to me because of the questions being asked in the beginning of this thread.
P.S. I am a totally satisfied customer…

not really sure why this is so confusing and offensive to people. It’s been the same way every time, and for $30 how can you really complain. If you wanted to upgrade another program it’d sure cost you a #### of a lot more.
If you’re worried about stability, don’t upgrade until the bugs have been ironed out. I like to upgrade regardless. if there’s a bug I can’t get around I just revert.
Of course, I’m only recording bands a couple of times a year so for home use bugs aren’t that big of a deal for me.
Just remember, you can’t revert a project. You can rebuild it from the constituent wave files, though (and a little foresight, like extending all tracks to wave files that start at zero, merging punch-ins & whatever).
hey guys, i was using 3.3. Every other time i bring N-track up i can’t get it to record. so i says to myself, get rid of 3.3 and upgrade for a change. so i just did the upgrade for $29. how long does it take to get my registration code?
i hope this version (and v5) will be ready to go when i bring it up. i never ever change the settings if i know it will instantly record. but today, dunno—it drove me to my credit card. i was writing a song and didn’t wanna forget it…no Ntrack. i must admit i have a cheapy lil mike for “quick inspiration” urges. still—it always works…
this 4.0 demo should work till i get my code–right? thx

hey stu---in an earlier post you threatened to go to Cakewalk. ok---so what are you going to do? are you unhappy with N-track? If you are then why don't you move on? jus wondering.......give me some secrets so i can move on to....

v4 has not ever felt like a “professional” program to meIt just hasnt really worked all that great on either computer.
I don’t expect to get v5 for free because I bought v4 a year ago… but i would like to state that i think all the version 4 users who’ve felt like they were beta testing an incomplete program because of bugs probably deserve v5 for free. I know for the price it’s great and all, but anything being sold as a finished product should have some standards of stability.

Isn't that the truth. I wish I could sue Microsoft for the endless times my Windows 95, 98, 98se, and Millenium crashed and burned my computer. Then to add insult to injury, they charge to talk to a tech. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

And Millenium, what was that piece of s#!t software... yikes!!!! Talk about paying good money to be a beta tester....

At least Win XP has been slightly stable if you can disregard virus vulnerabilities and constant updating to further control the abilities of your machine (think DRM).
Anyway, V.4 has been stable for me. I am mostly concerned about CPU usage and what will be in this new package that will make me want to update...
If it adds notation based midi, I might really like it...

(I likes to write it out!)

I hear you. I've been a registered user since 2.3. It's been downhill since 3.3. 4.x is a bloated joke. BTW, I have been a big fan in the past. 7 people have registered n-track on my recommendation.
Jeff
If Flavio is following the footsteps of the ol’ MS-DOS, version 5 should be awesome - stable and functional. Remember MS-DOS 2.0, 4.x, 6.0? They were horrendous. Yet version 3.x, 5.x and 7 (Win95) was very stable and a leap in functionality. Here’s to hope eternal.
Im am quite a bit angry, that version 5 is not free for vers. 4 users, because i have the strong feeling version 4 was just moneymaking. anouncing new (and some really cool) features that never really worked! or something else broke! he should get some betatesters before releasing the new verion instead of taking money for software that doesn
t really work!
if this doesnt happen, i
ll be a happy REAPER user!
Dudes! This is a really common upgrade policy. It’s exactly like every previous version of n-Track Studio. And gazillions of other programs - not even just shareware. (Think ProTools, Tracktion, Ableton… And even Microsoft did it with Outlook several years ago.)
And I’m surprised that people still have adverse reactions to .NET.
.NET is the future for Windows developers. 80% of the applications I use (Visual C#, SQL Server, DozingDogs, etc.) currently require it, and the upcoming version of Windows will be built upon it. It would be somewhat absurd to expect FASOFT or any other software company to refuse to upgrade - and continue to develop on outdated, soon-to-be-unsupported platforms.
but PT WORKED! the updates are pricy but, there where some betatesters who checked if this new version works.
with Ntrack YOU pay for being a betatester, that is what makes me angry. i would pay more, if the new version worked fine.
but i don`t see this coming

jotb, I understand your frustration but you don’t have to upgrade to every version. There are plenty of V3 users out there still and maybe even some v2. I’m still using an early V4.
What’s more you do get a chance to run a demo first to see if it suits your need.
I don’t think Flavio is being unfair. I think he’s offering a powerful product at the price of a few beers. He’s trying to balance the desires of those who refer to n-track as “bloated” with those who “must have feature X or it’s crap software”.
I’m looking forward to V5 but I’m not using it unless it has audio scrub (
