Jet City amps

Just get busy and get that K-720 chassis outta that cabinet… If you get a shock I’ll come right over there and take it off your hands… :p

Bill…

Ok boys, I hear ya. :)

But these things are cheap-as-chips on your side of the planet. You could get yer own ya know!

Bill..

Ah, well, soon, perhaps, but I have FAWM coming up. I have 1,000,000 excuses.

Outta sight…
Outta mind…
I hear you…
I’d hate to see that amp at the landfill site…

Over here the landfill operators are not taking electronic hardware anymore…
They are saying it pollutes their fields…
The stuff has to go to a collection yard where it gets separated into recyclable components…
The trash collectors are getting very picky as to what they’ll load unto their trucks, over here…

I believe you may have one of a very few of these amps, remaining on the planet…

Is the name Kay One-in-the-Same ????
Did they make Acoustic Basses ?
are they still in operation ?

Bill…

[edit]
I found it…
Kay Musical Instrument Company This browser search is something else… :)

Bill, I still say you need to tell me how much you would charge to have it reconditioned. :agree: I will send the amp along to you.

I would be frightened to think how the Customs people would treat this shipment and then what would the Shipping charges amount to ???? on both sides of the border…
I’m more inclined to jump in the truck and on my way across the country visit Flint and do an amp restore in person…
just for the fun of it…

Bob did a Google search on the Kay K-720 Amp and came up with another restore that we referenced a while back…
The amp should have an Oxford 15" speaker in the cabinet…
I think we chin wagged over that on the earlier thread…
He also thinks that Danelectro played a big part in the Kay Line…
I’m more inclined not to believe that…
However, I believe Kay Instruments were sold through Sears…

On that wiki site, they go into some history on Kay Musical Instruments…
Fascinating…
I’d love to have a Kay Acoustic Bass…
Got one you want to part with ????
A custom made one from outta the late '50’s early '60’s
You know…
?

Bill…

Hey guys. I had a Kay electric guitar in the 70s. 1976. I still have the receipt.

Same as this one:

And some years later I picked up and old Kay p-bass like this:

http://www.bass-guitar-museum.com/bass-10…d-Maple

Wish I’d never sold it. Such a good feel and deep thunk to it.

Well, Marshall has gone, Jet City arrived.

Only had a play for 10 minutes but what a fun little amp. Flippin’ loud. Nice clean sound and various levels of grit and distortion.

But I have to go out so now more playing until tomorrow.

The guy who did the swap with me is a “Vintage Musical Instrument specialist” as a day job (but currently out of work). Said he’s only seen one of these Marshalls in NZ. Recognised my Shergold straight off. Knew all about it.

We probably could’ve chatted for ages but he wanted to hit the road again.

I’m happy. I hope he’s happy. I don’t even care if the amp gets sold in some vintage amp shop somewhere as long as someone gets it and is happy.

More details soon

Make some clips. :agree:

:agree:

Yep. Will do. Might take a few days before I get time, but yes, yes.

I believe the name Kay got sold to the wrong music people when the Owner decided he was done with it… I think, they (the new Owners) had another agenda and left Kay just so it wouldn’t create competition…
As well, musicians are somewhat Fickle… Good quality music equipment deserves quality musicians and vise verse…
Kids are so impressionable…
They see this stuff on the touring stages and then they tell their parents that if they don’t have that stuff to play with they wouldn’t become famous musicians, or whatever…
That’s another approach to what happens in the music equipment industry…
Much of this gear is given to these Touring Acts to promote their products and Brand Names…
Many of us are aware of what goes on, I’m sure…

It would be nice to hear that Jet City Amp “sing”…
:agree:
:)
Have you been able to look at the Brand Names of those tubes…

It might be interesting to find out what they are…

Mark A…
you’re correct…
Good playing technique over-rides poor quality instruments every time…
BUT, it’s nice to know-and-appreciate and know good playing equipment, at and early stage in music development… To-a-Point…
it don’t matter how good your guitar or bass is… It’s nice to hear “Your Sound” coming from a good sounding amp…
It sort ta makes you play with a little more determination…
:)
:p

I can't see the tubes clearly enough Bill. From what I read on the forums they are generic Chinese ones. Just priced up a set of JJ EL34s. Bit too pricey for me at the moment.

I had another tiny play on the amp today with a couple of guitars. Tried my P-bass too.

I'll try to post some clips tomorrow.... :-)

It really don’t matter what brand of tubes are in the amp…
As long as the amp “Sings”
nice…
You know…
When the amp sounds right, it’s gonna make you wantta play it…

Bill…

So here’s a really quick hack job.

I took a song I did years ago (2005 I think) and chucked out the main guitars so I could use the Jet City.

Miked with a '57. I’m not particularly pleased with what I captured, and there’s loads of mistakes, but hey, it was fun. Kinda.

Not sure it really shows off the amp either.

No, those are really good, really real tones.
the distorted lead around 2:45 is a fabulous tone to me. I can really hear the tubes.

Thanks Tom.

Hi Mark A:

That’s gonna be a great sounding Amp…
:agree:

As you track, you’ll eventually find the mic placement and playing level(s).
Sweet Spots…

What’s in the speaker cabinet ???? that you used ?

It’d be nice to get Mr Soul to lend you his comments on the setup…

Bill…

Hi Bill

With regard to the speakers the advertising blurb says “A pair of Jet City Custom Eminence drivers”. I’ve not taken the back off yet to have a looky-see.

You have got the better of the deal with this trade…
That’s my opinion…
I was talking about the deal with a few guys around here…
They all agree…

I appreciate the confirmation Bill.
I think so too.
That old Marshall wasn't anything special.
It's only real value IMO was that it was 35 years old. Almost just 'collectable' rather than giggable.
