n-Track Future

I would like to know from you guys if N is dead now since there has been no updates at all.
N seems to be ready for the boneyard.

It won’t be dead until everyone stops using it. :)

(still working fine for me)

have you tried it yet? give it a whirl, for some it works, for some it dosent,if you havent tried it you’ll never know, you’ll just go with whatever someone says works for them. :agree:

With all it’s “character” it’s still the one I use when I need a familiar friend to play with.

It is not dead.

or maybe it's just reached a level of maturity where it doesn't need updates every few weeks/days. Afterall there are many, many man-years of software development in there now and it's a very feature rich product.

It would be nice to think that perhaps Flavio is working on the next generation of n-track. He has some competition now in the lower price DAW market and if Flavio's business model is to compete he may well need to re-invent n-track periodically to stay current.

That is my hope. The current state of n-Track simply doesn't work for me. Well... it works, not just not as good as it once did. Lower track counts, lousy VSTi hosting and crashes out the wazoo. I have had to stop using it if I want to get anything done.

I'm cheering for Flavio and hoping for the next generation to be a big hit if indeed that is where he is heading.

D

N is not dead, but Ike Turner is,

Im still using version 3. Stable as a rock for me. :)

Where can I find a manual or instructions on how to use ntrack???

Pop over to the Download page and download the manual from there.

For tutorials etc, try audiominds.com or the n-track Wiki.

I’m using 5.1.1 without any problems so it’s not dead for me but I am concerned about n-Track’s future. I’ve been very fortunate because I just haven’t had the kind of stability problems that many users report. I started with 3.3 and through every upgrade this program has been consistently terrific for what I do.

But n went through a rough patch just about the time Reaper came on the scene and Reaper is capturing all the buzz. I suspect this has hurt the sales of n-Track which ain’t good. For quite a while n-Track occupied this little niche but it’s not the only game in town anymore.

I will probably continue to use n-Track for quite a while even if updates stop. But if the program becomes abandoned then I’ll eventually have to move on. I’ve recorded and mixed about 30 projects and over 300 songs with n-Track and it’s allowed me to produce recordings that sound amazingly professional considering my modest setup. If I have to move on I’ll always have a soft spot in my digital heart for Flavio and this program.

I just use it to press record, than I play :)

I suppose though if I needed a more synthesized sound or lager orchestration I would need another program to complete it.

I have used Fruity Loops and as far as drum loops and a large database of different synths and ways to track them in real time it was like a band in a box. (of course we are talking in the 300~400 $ range software)
The only way I know how to do this with N is in midi and without a keyboard I don’t know how that works…that is to say it seemed to require a lot more programing than the Fruity interface.

If this program was to go in a different direction IMO that would be an area to explore.
Like some sort of BPM beat generator that one could add different percussion sounds in at different points…option a sound font database for the generator? Reason has a pretty large one (database that is)…
Of course I haven’t seen anything but screen shots from versions above 2.3 so maybe it already does that stuff! lol

Perhaps a merger would suite N?

I have seen several drum and synth generating softwares out there in the $30 range…to combine a descent wav editor like N with one of them would be more like Fruity or Cool Edit and more like a band in a box without the hassle of midi and all the convenience of real time editing and generating of beats/sounds/instruments.

keep shinin’

I haven’t been in the forum for a while and I was surprised to see this thread.
I have started working on version 6.0 so there won’t be new releases for a while but n-Track is alive and well and it will be updated and maintained for a long time to come.

Happy holidays to all,

Flavio.

Hi Flavio:

Thanks for the reply to to this topic. I don’t seem to have any of these issues here with my setup.
However, recently, I hav3 been working on a project that was started way back in v4.2.1 build 2099…
I’ve found that after I’ve rendered the timeline to two tracks and play the product of those tracks I hear random studders from the file as it streams from the drive…
At least that’s what I think it is…
I transferred the file to GoldWave v5.22 (latest Build) and I don’t hear any of the random Burps.
I don’t even hear any of these issues when I have the tracks on the timeline before I rendered the tracks…
Strange, to say the least…
I posted the two track render…
You’ll find it here…

HERE…

I posted the link cause I would like to see if the file will play on another setup and give the same response…
as if it were played on my setup…
I would have liked to have completed the Edit-and-Render on n-Track but I found that I was unable to do that…
The studdering-and-Burping only appeared after I pushed the level up to where I thought I’d like the average level to be.

Could it be that the file has a problem streaming from the hard drive ????
It’s like the “Buffer Packets” of information, from this file, don’t like to be streamed from the hard drive into n-Track…
Cause this file plays well on any other audio application…

Remember, this file is an mp3 file…
However, the two-track .wav file produces the same issues when repro’d using n-Track…

This is interesting, to say the least… ????

By the Way… I’d like to wish you a Merry Christmas and All the Best for You and All n-Trackers here on the Board … in 2008…

Excellent news, thanks Flavio.

Are you able to give us a little taste of what we can expect in V6?

Tnx for the good news, Flavio. My colleague & I have been caught up in a lot of systems work for the company and assorted relatives & friends. I’s taken us out of recording for a few months, but we’ve done some playing around. The only real trouble we had to report was due to the loss of a few DX plug-ins we formerly had on our old systems, but didn’t have when we went to the new ones. Other than that, the issues were basically small user-related problems. Smokeriders still stands by n-Track and will continue to do so as long as you stay in the business.

Hi, Bill, good to see there are some of the old hands still around.

And a Merry Christmas to all!

Thanks for the update, Flavio. I’m looking forward to using n-Track for a long time to come.

So exhilarating! I can’t wait to see ntrack V6!
Good job ! and Merry Christmas to all :)

And a “Io, Saturnalia!” to each and every one of you!

Jeez, every time I have upgraded I’ve only had to tweak a few things here and there to get everything in working order.

And we’re on the verge of a splurge,
with a new interface to replace
the old Aardvark card
with something new in the way of hard-
ware…
