Well let’s see, Stratocaster, probably the most popular P.O.S. guitar on the face of the earth. I too have never had the first strat “talk to me” as in “play me, play me.” I could actually lay down and take a nap playing a strat, that boring. Sorry, just my taste.
And being so popular, well I’ve never been one to follow the crowd. To me it’s like yer Mom saying "if everyone else jumped off the cliff wearing a strat would you!"
Everyone has their guitar of choice, software for recording, soundcard, etc etc. It’s cool in my book if you wanna use nTrack, if you wanna play a strat, use whatever soundcard. I have more than one guitar, I have more than one soundcard, I have more than one recording proggy.
I use whatever works for me at the time, nuff said 'bout that
Back to guitars, the band practiced last night, used the PRS SE custom, it will remain in my arsenal, great feel, neck takes a little adjusting to, getting used to the trim pots will take a little practice, but pretty awsum and the sound was great.
One other word about strats, with all the pics Bruffie posted above not a stock strat on the page with maybe the exception of Jimi, not dissing any of those guitarist, they are all great, just their choice of guitar.
Footnote, Yes it’s hard to beat a “Red Strat”, but with the right sledge hammer it is possible to beat the crap out of it!
Looky here boys…if you want a GOOD Strat then build one yourselves! I did in hard tail with a Warmouth maple on maple neck. Neck is oil finished with a 14" radius. Wide, flat stretch for days, great for FAT FINGERS!! Wired it for single or humbucker mode.
For a chunky low end I use either an older fan head Ibanez AS80 or my home bastarized Tele. The Tele was a pawnshop find for $75. Refinsh, replace bridge, tuners, route for double buckers, make custom pickguard/routing cover. Disconect tone pot, hard wire tone caps to take upper frquency edges off, drop in a 1 meg pot on volume, Duncan Shreader at bridge, APC custom wound (the owner wound it special for me…nice guy), at the neck. Graphtec nut & string tree. Goes from 0 to hell in less then 60 seconds.
“DING”…Round 2!
Remember these tidbits…
The Stratocaster was originally nothing more than an attempt at creating the sound of an acoustic guitar in a way that could be amplified.
The Les Paul was intended to be a new sound.
Both were entended to be played clean and, when recording, straight to the mixing board.
…then someone figured out some amps would distort…
Mmmm… yummy… NICE… VERY NICE…
DITTO THIS ONE…

Ok...Confession time. The best sound I ever heard on stage was from Andy Powells' original Gibson Flying V...... I'm off to get therapy now

Hey, they have one of those for sale at the cool music store in Lansing, about an hour from me, not a bad price:

I still like my Ric for playability. And PRS. Someday I will buy one of their top o' the line guitars.
BTW, I read this thread backward, and I vaguely remember someone calling a strat "boring." Just a friendly question" R U INSANE?

Im not understanding the reasons behind a Strato being boring,
With a Strat,I have a choice of 5 diff sounds
With a LP or another two hummbucker, I have a choice of 3 sounds…
With a Strat I have neck access to the 17th fret
With A LP I have access to the 12th fret,
With a Strat I can add shimmering whammy touches to my chords
With a LP I can forget about any of that
With a Strat I can lay my pinky around my volume pot and do some swells when I like
With a Lp you must have a pinky thats at least 9 inches long to do that…
Witha Strat I can tickle the trem springs in back of the guitar for a wind comming up out of the desert sound
Witha LP you better have a soundfont of a Strat being tickled if you wanna sound like Jimi’s"WILL I LIVE TOMORROW"
So where is the boring?
Its on your side of the fence Ladies
ps,Where is it said in the Fender history books that Strat was made to sound like an acoustic,WHERE?
the Teles were already made, from all acounts Ive ever read they wanted to have a 3 pickup guitar(because all that there was was 2 at that time)and it was taylor’d to meet certain things pros wanted ina guitar(pros being guys that played sessions everyday and worked a playing gig at night, not someone who knew guys that were"In The Know")
Phoo,
you are usually informed on your posts and I do enjoy most of them, but man you are so off the mark on this one Im inclined to think that someone has stolen your ID.Gibson made a pickup for an acoustic in 1935(the Charlie Christian)what would be Fenders reason to do the same thing 20 years later? read the history of the stratocaster book, and it explains why they did what they did ,and its explained by the guys that were there with Leo when he was comming up with it.

The reason being that it was a solid body guitar. Heard it from Leo Fender on a documentary so time ago. A pick-up for an acoustic was either a built in mic or a typical magnetic pickup. The mic was just a mic and the magnetic pickup didn't produce the sound of a real acoustic.
I'm not saying they succeeded. I'm saying that's what Leo Fender said when talking about the origins of the strat. I don't think even he thought they succeeded in the original mission.

I spent a while listening to the clips on the Reverend site… really cool stuff. The prices are reasonable and by other accounts I’ve read, they’re pretty darn good guitars… I’m gonna have to check them out. Like Teryeah, I have a “thing” for the un-conventional guitar.
D
Okay… been seriously browsing around the webber-net gawking Reverend Guitars.
I officially have a woody for either a Double-Agent, a Manta Ray 290 (RED!) or a Buckshot.
Now to scrounge up some dough. Anybody wanna buy a nice Godin LGX-III with case?

Hmm - they all sound too “thin” to me, and the over drive seems to only amplify that.
Hard to tell off the net though. I’m going to the big city the end of this week - Guitar Center time. I don’t think they carry Reverends though - I wanna play a Line 6 Variax though.
I tried out a Variax once… wasn’t very impressed but who knows… No, Guitar Center won’t have a Rev unless it’s a used one.
The Line 6 Variax sounded best connected “digitally” to a POD but it seemed kind of “disconnected” feeling if you know what I mean. shrug Thrash on one for a while, it may suit you just fine.
D
PS Yeah… I don’t place much faith in mp3 or YouTube clips for judging the sound. It usually seems to ditch the lower mids and most of the low end while making the highs brittle sounding. The reviews I read about a few different Revs gave them high marks for cool sounds.
Funny thing is… our lead guitar player in PTM uses a Variax… he pisses and moans and hates it… but it beats changing from electric, to acoustic, to banjo to… he has an A/B switch between his amp and the board depending on if he is using an electric or acoustic model. Though he does switch to a real mandolin. Drunk folks at a PTM show don’t know or care at all. They are just up front jumping up and down.
My Variax 600 reminds me of a CHEAP Strat copy, and I mean CHEAP. I like the electronics and variations, but as a good playing guitar it’s not hitting on much. I’m very disappointed in the overall quality of the guitar itself.
Next door neibor kid brough over a CHEAP $79 Strat copy and it played a LOT better. The necks and frets were almost identical.
The frets have sharp burs on the edges (that I have filed, but need to file again).
The nut is uneven and too high (I have got more filing to do)
The neck is slightly warped (not much I can do there as it is not something a truss rod adjustment can fix)
The tuners are crap (need to replace them)
Fretboard has a shiny varnish that only the best cheap guitars seem to have.
Maybe I should have gotten the 700 (cost a lot more). I can not imagine how bad a 300 would be.
Funny thing is, Teryeah was complaining about the gunky strings on my guitars, which was very true because I hardly ever change them (do not play enough…not a guitar player…does not bother me). But the strings on the Variax were only a week or so old, and he still complained. And he was right.
I do not know if it is the saddles on the bridge, or what, but even brand new strings seem slightly dampened like strings get when they do not have that brand new twang anymore. I assume it is the saddles since that is where the pickups are.
All that and I still like the sounds for the most part.
(had to take out all the contractions – errors posting with them there)
Oh, they are crap for sure. Like a poorly finished Dan Electro built around space man electronics. The electronics are what you are paying for. The rest is just a cheap chassis.
Hmmm - I can buy those electronics - I saw them somewhere…
Fender necks will fret out on you with big bends if the action is too low

I'll take any guitar, any day, with PW's setup. And I do mean any brand and any price tag. But the strats low volume sound is priceless and a pauls high volume sound is priceless.
Someone make me a pickup that acts like this. Volume wide open; picked soft sounds like a strat at low volume, when beat sounds like a paul at high volume.
D? Do they even acknowledge you in the R boards? You must be really lonely over there!
