Question..

Regarding Audio Hardware Drivers…

Hi n-Trackers:

Recently, with-in the past week I have updated Mocrosoft/Windows Security and downloaded the recommended Internet Explorer v7 updates-and-files that are available to make my Operating System…
Current and Up-to-Date…

However, by doing all that I am unable to correctly launch n-Track v5.1.1 build 2313…
The latest build…

When I launch n-Track this desk appears…
Notice that the “VIEW ALL SONG” icon is Hi-Lited
I am unable to import-or-open a .wav or .sgn file to the timeline…
In fact…
by doing so…
OR closing n-Track will open a "SEND .dmp File off to Flavio…

I haven’t continued or allowed the .dmp file to send to Flavio…
As, I am not sure if the issue is with n-Track.

When I open the Audio Hardware folder in the Device Manager I don’t see the Audio Hardware appearing in there properly…
When I look at the audio Hardware Properties …
they appear to show that the hardware is properly installed and the pop-up screen says that they are working properly…
but N-Track reports that the re=play and record drivers are not installed correctly.
AND n-Track gives no procedure as to what to do to fix the problem…

I’m considering to uninstall the Audio Hardware and re-install the cards and re-install the drivers that were originally installed…
OR…
I am considering uninstalling n-Track v5.1.1 build 2313 and re-installing v5.1.1 again…
However, I’m not sure just what I should attempt first…

1…

Should I allow the .dmp file to send off to Flavio??

2…
Uninstall and re-install n-Track v5.1.1???

3…

Uninstall and re-install the Audio Hardware and reload the drivers???

This happens to be the ASUS Intel P-111 machine…

The Audio hardware that is installed is a S/B Live 5.1 audio card…
AND

a S/B 24-bit audio card…
They were originally working with NO ISSUES…
They were install using the same IRQ9 settings on this machine… Both worked properly
and with no issues of any kind…
Until this past week…
Some good sound advise as to how to fix this issue and what order to approach the FIX would be greatly accepted…

Pull every piece of hardware out, not limited to audio, that you can and reinstall them one at a time. Make sure your modem and net cards are out.

I would also suggest to never put two Creative cards in the same machine at the same time. I've found that they don't like each other and a modem and/or netcard at times. Just because they were working doesn't mean they were happy workers. (yes, that CAN work, but we're trouble shooting and I know for a fact that CAN be an issue)

Hi bill
the easiest thing to do is to re-install N - BUT looking at your screenshots the problem may be deeper seated -

the bottom screenshot shows a green background which i take to be Win 98se - if so, then you have upgraded XP on a dual boot PC, since 98se has not been upgradable since God was a boy it may be that an XP upgrade has upset your 98se registry - if so -you may have to to uninstall 98se and reinstall it on a seperate removable hard drive - you can put your C drives in removable cartridges - 1 for XP and 1 for 98se - then you just plugin the one you want before you switch on and thats it, perfecto -

Dr J

Hi phoo and DR Jackrabbit:

Thank you for your replies and all…
I’m gonna post up some more print screens…
I didn’t give you all of the information that could very well be the cause of the issue that I have now…
I do believe that it may be a hardware conflict now, however, I don’t believe it started out that way…

SORRY…

Who Knows ????
Surely…
Not Me…

For quite a while now I have been unable to LAN this P-111 and the the two Studio machines I have…
It goes back to when I began to have Tracker’s Block…
Before this condition I could trade .sgn files through the LAN and edit .wav files through the LAN and do just about any audio function I desired to attempt on any of these three machines I chose to do through the LAN…I could never reach my setup’s limit-and-anything I could imagine… in my little Audio World.

Doc. J…
The Print Screen of the operating system is a “Stripped Down” version of XP Home…
It looks like a '98SE Desk…
and…
when it works right it almost feels like a '98SE Operating System…
Believe me…
It’s so nice…

phoo and Mark A were the inspirational n-Track Forum Members that made this setup work, way-back-when… They pointed me and suggested utility fixes-and-ideas that integrated the P-4 and P-111 Studio Machines that are the Dual Boot '98Se and XP Machines… into the setup I currently have…
I can tell you…
it was and still is way ahead of my computer imagination-and-knowledge…
I could have never assembled this set-up on my own…

Sense I’m not tracking in the Studio, it’s not important…
AND… I don’t integrate the Studio Machines with the the P-111 Editing Machine…
One day that might become important again…
but for now…
it’s the this P-111 editing machine that I have all these issues, with…

I have read-and-reread your reply, phoo…
I think you may have “Nailed” what could be before me, in order to make this setup run again, like it did…

You see…
I do everything
IN-and-OUT of Audio along with testing and working with and going On-line and abusing this machine to No-END…
before I transfer audio related utilities on the two Studio Machines…
Then…
It was last July that I ran into a bunch of viruses and Trojans with this machine and brought This and the Studio Machines to the brink of destruction…
I recovered from all this but after that, the LAN never worked as it should…
I was forced to move to Panda Antivirus+Firewall 2008 on these machines…
AND a slow downhill loss-of-overall performance on this set-up…

I have a LONG Weekend ahead of me…
Maybe, tomorrow I’ll Print screen some of these Machine’s specs. and…
if you’re interested take a peek at what the images show…
Maybe, you’ll suggest something to me… OR… Something that might get me outta this quagmire I find myself in…

I don’t wantta show too much disappointment and negativity in my post…
On the other hand I’d really like to show a positive attitude and take something positive away from all this…

I can tell you…
It’s tough…

Bill…

[EDIT]

It’s nice to see you around here again
Doc. J…
I hope all is O.K.
with you…

Mark A is up here hammering away at his keyboard…
BUT…
I haven’t seen Wihan Stement
?
Spelling…
The South African…
Where is HE ????

Hi Gents:

I’m mentally preparing to spend the day and whatever is necessary to see if I can return this P-111 and n-Track b2313 to operating condition and maybe save myself from a major format and C Drive XP Rebuild.

I am now unable to open the Device Manager by going to Start> Setting> Control Panel…
By attempting to enter the Control Panel this way clears ALL the icons from the Desk…
Then nothing happens for about 30 seconds…or…
till the icons reappear on the desk BUT NO CONTROL PANEL SCREEN…
I am only able to reach the Control Panel by Right-clicking on My Computer and then EXPLORE…
Then scroll down to Control Panel and then a Left-click will bring up the control panel…

If I didn’t know better I’d say some kind of Virus or Trojan has entered into the Windows Folder.
However, Panda 2008 says the computer is free of anything It Scans-and-Looks for…

Doc J…
I was considering removing n-Track from this machine…
I have v4.2.1 b2099 on this machine…
I works perfectly or as well as I remember…
I repro’s and records just fine on this machine with the S/B Live 5.1 Audio Card and the way it’s installed at present on this machine.
Even though something is not right with the Hardware installation(s)…

So…
after looking at this task for some length of time and weighting the pluses-and-minuses I decided to press the “Revert To Default” button on v5.1.1 b2313…
I find that I am now able to launch b2313 and navigate through the menus of b2313 without causing n-Track to close/crash…
I really hate Resetting n-Track to Default…
It seems as it’s a long drawn out process for me to return n-Track to the control settings that works for me and my setup…

As bad as this machine has become… I think this action may have stopped the slow downhill slide that has taken hold on this machine…

Can anyone comment on this idea I have…
????

Setting-and-Adjusting n-Track’s behaviour from the “DEFAULT SETTINGS” requires a huge amount of resources that could be better used to operate n-Track and produce audio with-in the confines of the computer that one uses…

Saying that another way…

Would it be better or more productive for n-Track and the Computer …
NOT to mess with the Default Settings of N-Track… ????

I have a few things to play with and consider before I go playing with the LAN Card and Modem behaviour of this machine… Way back when I used to trade mail with Flavio on issues I had… He would say… Have you reverted n-Track to default ??

Bill…

I navagated away from the Board long enough to be unable to edit the earlier reply.

Now that I have reverted to default the n-Track Settings, I am able to open the control panel of this computer by “Left-clicking” on Start > Settings > Control Panel…

Could that have been the issue with this machine
????

This machine appears to be back and behaving like it did some number of months ago…

Is that possible ????

Bill, I’m not sure if this has any bearing on your problem. But I’m finding that build 2313 is not that stable and has a lot of weird things happening.

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been working with the 2311 build, which seemed very stable and predictable. But I ran into a snag with one of our songs where I had a “reverse latency” issue. So I upgraded to the latest build, thinking that would solve it. But it didn’t. I ended up rebuilding the song file and the issue disappeared. Since then, I’m finding that 2313 is doing weird things, like not generating certain track displays correctly while recording (ie. tracks 1-3 and 7 displayed OK, but tracks 4-6 showed xxxxxx throughout the display - deleting and regenerating the npk file fixed it), the volume envelope nodes are again a bugger to grab, etc. It almost seems as though this build is reverting back to the 4.x bugs. This weekend, I think I’m going to go back to the 2311 build.

Paul

I also find 2311 a better choice when it comes to editing envelopes.
However, Bill, I am going to suggest that you bit the bullit and reinstall windows. If you want to you might try buying and running System Machanic 7 - it seems to repair many of the probelms I occationsally have.
However,
My experience is that when things truely get weird, the quickest thing is to start over. It is usually faster than trying to chase the problem and contacting Microsoft is useless.
I’d first try to install ove the existing version. This may not work as windows may produce a flag that says the version you are installing is older than the existing version and refuse to install. If that happens, I’d boot from the Cd drive and do a fresh install over the existing version - this is not as “safe” as formating, but at least you dopn’t have to rebuild all the data on your hard drive.
If you have not already done so, consider putting your Operating system on one drive (or partition) so that data nad the operating system are not on the same drive. I have found I have to reinstall windows a least once a year to keep it maximized.

Hi Gents:

I’m listening…
Loud-and-Clear…
The build of XP That is currently installed on this setup is the original installation…
I shudder to think how far back it goes.
Could I guess and say it’s July of '05 ????
At least that’s the Date I penned on the liner of the case that the XP Install disk is in.

I know little-if-any about how Operating Systems work.
I grope around and discover how something works till I find what works for me and then hope that nothing goes wrong with my set-up, until I have to…
Out-of-Necessity fix something that don’t work right.

Anyway, I have some print screens that show some System Information screens…

They show the machine’s specs…
the conflict/sharing screen
and the IRQ assignment screen…
for this P-111…

I’m gonna post the "Sound Video and Game Controller and a few other items in the Device Manager…
You;ll see that the S/B 24-Bit audio card does not appear in the Sound section of the audio hardware…
I’m not sure why…
I think I may remove-and-reinstall that card to see if I am able to get it to reappear …I know, when it and if it does it’ll show up on IRQ 9… However, in the past the two S/B audio cards did not appear to be in conflict…
as much as I know…
I used them one-at-a-time and together as necessary when editing files with-in n-Track…
I really hate to fool around with that area of the Device Manager…
The thing being I had one heck of a time to install the ATI All-In-Wonder Graphics Card with all the files and drivers it took to install it into XP…

Bill…

Hi Gents:

It happened…
Over the weekend this P-111 became un-bootable.
I attempted to boot into Safe Mode…
Eventually it did but commands take forever to happen…
I pulled out all the Cards from the MainBoard…
except the ATI AIW 128Pro AGP Graphics Card…
I attempted to boot normally but the Boot would Hang at the XP Welcome Screen…
I attempted to boot into Safe Mode…
and could reach the DESK but it takes forever to make any commands work…

Could someone tell me what that is a sign of ????
I’m thinking that something on the MainBoard has failed…
To get this computer back-up-and-running…
Is there something I can do to get this XP Home machine to boot?

Bill…

Can you try another Video card? They can be a problem. If that doesn’t wrok, you probaly have to reinstall windows which you seem to not want to do -
Do you have an extra hard drive? If you do, trade out the hard drives and reload windows on the replacement drive. Does that work? If that does, . well, could be your old hard drive or could be the Operating system needs to be reinstalled.
If the replcaement hard drive does not work, you got problems with hardware - memory, or mainboard

Hi bax3:

I have other Graphics Cards.
They are Invidia Pro 64’s (Spelling)…
Anyway, I’ve used this ATI card with great performance and service.
For me… and, this ATI Card offers video capture ability, that I use…
and it’s always been stable with any machine I’ve used it with.
That was in the '98SE days…
When I went to XP I had a problem finding the right Drivers… But after I found the ones that worked for the setup I have the card worked with no issues.
BUT…
Who knows…
The card may now be faulty…

Yes…
I have all kinds of hard drives…
I’d like to use the drive I have now…
Cause MicroSoft recognizes that drive as being the drive that is registered with this Computer and MicroSoft… BUT…
I’m not sure if that matters…anymore…
Maybe, I should write Microsoft some mail and ask some questions regarding re-building/building another computer with this XP Disk and parts…
It’s just so disappointing…

I don’t have much data/information on the C Drive that I need to backup…
But there’s some…
Mostly, it’s just the programs/.exe’s or applications…
I have a bunch of personal info on it that I’d like to retrieve…
Like, three -or-four years of stuff…
After that formatting is O.K.
with me…
That’s if Microsoft will give me a new set of reg codes…
I’d hate to have to go buy another XP Operating System/Disk…
I even have another Mainboard that is the identical board that is this machine…
It’s an ASUS CUSL2c Intel…
There’s quite a FanBase for this Board for some reason… It appears that this Board is an Intel/Industry Classic/Standard…

Maybe, I should go over to their Message Board… I’ve been there-done-that…
However, If you don’t know the questions to ask they just overlook you and you don’t get any replies to any questions you ask…

If there’s anything I hate…
It’s Computers…
:p

Bill…

Hi Wox I have have had a problem like yours in the past that I could not solve so I by chance had another spare hard drive of I installed and made it the master and made my old HD the slave and was able to transfer my files safely.I don’t know if this will help but you might try it and that way you can try to repair your old HD.

Hi pflan74:

Thanks for your reply to this topic.
Did you have to re-install the Operating System?
OR

By transferring the data from the old drive to the new one… was the new drive boot-able?

You see I have a couple of years of Microsoft updates and security files to download if I have to re-install the Operating System…
It’s gonna take forever for me to do that with a dial-up and modem…

This whole failure is so disappointing.
It’s an outdated machine to begin with…
It’s like beating down a broken door…

Bill…

reinstall the operating system. You will have 30 days to trouble shoot the new drive to see if the old drive is the problem. If it is, MS will let you register the new drive at no cost and little trouble - it may require a phone call if the Xp system has been iunstalled/registered. more than three times.
Start a directory called Drivers or Downloads or something you like for a name and keep every driver that you need saved there after downloading. Then back it up to a Cd.
Really, really, really, it is not worth the pain you are going through to protect an old install. Trouble shooting used to be Fun! it is a hazard to a persons health now. Bit the bulet and start over. Use another drive first to see if all the hardware will install and work. Video cards are a major sourse of problems. Try one of the others.

Hi Bill,

I have to concur with others. With the problems you are having the most sensible solution is a ground-up rebuild. It’s not uncommon to have to do that every now and then anyway; PCs have a habit of slowing down and bogging down over time and a rebuild gives them a supercharge.

As for having to re-buy WinXP, that should not be necessary as long as you have the COA sticker with the licence code on it. If not, you may be able to reverse engineer it out of the registry - I’m sure tools exist to do so. You should be able to re-register using the same code, although you may have to give them a call on the number that comes up when you install the software.

As pointed out above, don’t authorise the software until you are happy that it is running right - you get 30 days before it stops working. There should be no issues in using your current system drive as a secondary drive and building a new system drive on a new disk. That way you can pull the files off the broken drive as needed and then format the old drive - chances are it will work fine as a spare drive after that.

It takes a little while to get all the drivers together so the advice to collect them together on a cd is wise advice. Since you have other PCs on the Internet you have the luxury of not having to do that before you flatten the PC you are building.

If you need any more help then just shout and we’ll do our best. If I could pop round and assist I would but I’m not sure I could make it there and back in a evening!

Mark

Hi
gents:

Thanks for your reply Mark A…
I’m gonna dismantle the P-111 and remove the RAID Drives from the Box.
Most of the Data-and-files that I’ve created over the days with this setup appears on the four drives that are in this machine.
They are 80,80,160 and 250 gig drives. The other drives left on this machine are two drives that are connected to the Primary PCI Port…
Then there are two DVD Burners connected to the Secondary PCI Port…

My plan/idea is to swap the four RAID Drives out of the P-4 and replace those four Drives with the P-111 RAID Drives.

You see…
The P-111 is an XP single boot machine with NTFS Formatted drives…
But the P-4 is a Dual Boot machine with '98SE and XP Operating Systems.
So, I have a mixture of FAT 32 and NTFS Formatted drives (out of the six) in the P-4 now. But I believe that the Drives that are in the P-111 RAID setup are all NTFS Drives. The FAT 32 Formatted drives can be recognized by either Operating system.
But the NTFS drives can only be recognized by XP…

ONE:----

I believe that the NTFS Formatted drives…
AND the FAT 32 Formatted drives
can be converted to (EITHER/OR) Formatted drives without re-formatting them…
I think…

TWO:-----

I don’t think it quite matters to me that they be NTFS drives for what-or-how I use the data for …
Well, maybe the Video files I have on the drives…
Some of those files are up to and as large as 4-to-4.7 Gig files…
Maybe, I do some file transferring to get all the large files on one of the large drives and formatted in NTFS…
The reason for the FAT 32 drives is so the '98SE boot drive can be used and with the old audio hardware I have with this P-4…

The XP Boot Drive in the P-4 is formatted with FAT 32…
It seems to work O.K.
formatted in FAT 32…

You see, when this setup was designed, the Board Members of the day were very instrumental in suggesting and designing how this setup worked. I couldn’t have put this setup together with my computer knowledge…
Mark A and phoo and several other guys were the inspiration for me… It works so well all these years…

The only part of the setup that gave me issues was the LAN behaviours.
When it works it’s so nice…
XP-to-XP is almost perfect.
XP-to-'98SE is something less than perfect, when it worked…
Then after the Virus and Worm attack and the installation of Panda Antivirus 2008 + Firewall … no LAN operation at all…
It could be that the correct setting of the Firewall eludes me…
I really don’t need a Firewall on the LAN…
I just need a Firewall on-and-when I’m connected to the Internet, with my setup…
Anyway, that’s something to consider in the operation of an updated/new setup…

Before I get too far along with this update I am “TOYING” with the idea of a Server-Box with maybe 1000 - 2000 Gig of storage space that is wireless connected/LAN’d… Is that something I should be considering
or should I get that out of my thinking ????

AND

Able to be connected to any machine I set-up…
AND …
Do away with all these Hard drives in the boxes…

We are forecast some nasty weather overnight and tomorrow…
As long as my snow blower fires up, I don’t care…
However, we had enough snow this season…

Bill…

You can move drives that contain data between computers, but Please be aware that you cannot just move the operating system
from one computer to another unless the machines are very simular.
A worst example would be moving from a AMD to Intel or vis/versa.
When Windows is installed it selects drivers for the various chips based on what is on the mother board.

What we have All been saying is that to test to see if it is a component in the computer, you need to do a fresh install.
To preserve what you have on your current drives, do the fresh install on the replacement drive.
I would not start with a RAID configuration - that could be the chip that is not working.
The idea is to start with very little and add back compponents until the system fails - that is the bad component. HOWEVER, I missed the information that you had a virus on the computer that started all this. That may require a format and reinsatll to fix. I’d certainly run the best virus checker I could find before I put any disks from the infected computer on another.

Hi bax3:

I had to move from AVG Free antivirus from this setup after it missed a Virus and Trojan and several Dialers that caused me Big Time issues .
I moved on to Panda AntiVirus-Firewall 2008 and as far as I know all the operating systems and drives are free of any addware, antivirus Trojans and worms and all… I found that utility after visiting several technical Boards that suggested I don’t install any Norton or Norton/like antivirus applications…
They seemed like they were against, or not fans of any Norton like antivirus applications…
for whatever reason… Anyway, I feel good that I have virus free hard drives …
but…
who really knows ????

I like the idea of grabbing one of these 80 Gig WD drives after removing any important data from it and using it to install the XP Home disk that I have along with just a graphics card…
and see if the P-111 Intel Asus CUSL2c mainboard alone with the ram and power supply will produce an XP Desk-and-operating System that I can build upon…
Minus the network and Modem Cards…

Those cards would be the last cards along with the RAID card I think I’ll install on this build… Unless there’s a definate order to properly install a build…
I’m still not quite sure of the install order…
I believe the CUSL2c mainboard only has USB Rev 1 on it…
So I have a USB Card that brings the computer up to USB Rev 2
The the Audio Card I choose S/B 5.1 Live or the STA 2000 audio card…The STA 2000 audio card should be the audio card to install as it will create 24-bit audio .wav files. However, I personally like the S/B Live 5.1 audio card…
for it’s simplicity of operation…

Maybe, this weekend, I’ll have the opportunity… to spend some time to get on with this…

Bill…
