This may be somewhat unconventional, but here's how I ended up mic'ing the piano:

Actually, that is quite common.... for a reason as I think you found out.

I say "unconventional" only because most of the threads on piano mic'ing that I've seen in this forum and elsewhere talk about XY and ORTF.
In my case, the room is relatively small (not much larger than the piano, LOL), and it has carpet with a heavy pad on the floor, so it's fairly dead.
Close mic'ing (minimizing the less than ideal room's contribution to the sound) seemed like the way to go.

I have seen folks close mic a grand from below the soundboard for live sound, but have not tried that yet.
Seems like that would sound even more dead than what I came up with, especially on the high strings and upper harmonics.

Thanks for having a look!

I don't have anything useful to add to this thread, but that is really a nice recording.
How do you get him to practice?
:agree:
I have those mics also, for drums and acoustic guitar, but they really really sound great on your piano.
It does sound just a tiny little bit nasal, you need a nice room for the sound to bloom and cohere, I guess.

I have really enjoyed these mics for recording piano, jazz band, and even full wind ensemble--all direct to two track (as I say in this thread).
I agree with both of your comments.
With the mics as close to the strings and soundboard as they are, moving them just a tiny bit makes a noticeable difference in the tone.
I may have not found the sweet spot yet, so
I'll tweak a little more.

Thanks for giving this a listen and for your kinds words.
Cheers!

Oh, for got to comment on this.
We bribe him, of course!

Legos have been doing the trick for the last few months.
:-)

Awesome David. Nice recording. Keep him at it. Soon the Lego’s will give way to GEAR. Yamaha Motif… Korg M3… etc…

PS Bestest most epic take on ‘Carol of The Bells’ EVER… (Love these guyy.)

A Beamer…
OR…

Down-the-Road.
???
:)

Ha! I gotta get their newest CD...

Loves the TSO.

PS You know me Bubba. I like "musician's 'musicians'"... Can't PLAY like they do... I can always dream though. (and practice more)

The 2 GB thing is an o/s thing, as Unblown noted. XP service pack 3 and forward, as I understand it, have a maximum file-size of 8 GB, but before service pack 3, it was 2 GB

What are you guys going on about OS limitations? Max file size on NTFS is 16 EXAbytes… that’s 16000 terabytes. I think you are talking about the wav file limitation which is due to the fact it has a 32 bit header (we’re not talking about the actual audio data, it can be any bit depth).

I like monkeys

I like turtles.

I like confusion.

PS Except perhaps the grammar in that sentence...

You would make an excellent despot.

a home despot

Despot, like tyrant is a rather ugly word. I prefer “King”. Y’all can call me King Jonson if ye’ want… (the wife does) :D

UJ

PS On reflection… no. Y’all call me ‘Emperor’. Somehow it wouldn’t be the same for you monkey-butt hooligans to whisper huskily; “May I see King Jonson?” so let’s go with Emperor. Thanks…

Ok.
Glad to see that everyone is still having a good time here.

I installed the latest beta that Flavio released a couple of nights ago with my CTRL-SHIF-D “SPLIT” button and gave that a whirl at my daughter’s concert tonight.
Here’s a track from the set with my daughter playing clarinet (she’s one of several clarinetists, but the only freshman):

03. AHS Wind Ensemble - Pastime - A Salute to Baseball

I had some minor levels challenges since I was not expecting the percussion to come in so strong, but other than that, I’m fairly happy with how the recording came out, and very proud of the kids for cranking through this piece (one of many) during marching band season (perhaps some folks call it “football season”).

There are some interesting bugs in this verion of n-Track (especially in the “Edit” menu), but nothing that caused me any problems.
I did have my old Edirol R-09HR running in parallel through the single ended outputs of the mixer, just in case.
;-D

Thanks again to Flavio and everyone else here for having a listen and lending a hand.

Cheers.

Hi dmp-potn:

Raise a Bug Report and send it off to Flavio regarding those
Edit issues you discovered..
I'm sure he'd like to hear from you, on those matters..
:agree:

I'll support you in raising an issue with the Athletic Department with running sports while the Music Department is working on their Music Program..
I'll back you up till your nose bleeds..
:)

Bill..

Anyway, that tracking session turned out pretty good..
