Way to go Edmonton Oilers

Hi Tom:
That’s a nice reply/post to this thread… When you’re involved in Pro-Sports be it a player/owner/coach, or whatever, your become suseptable to how the media, public and fans view you… and… even in the “Minors”… for that matter… IT’s something like… “You’re as good as the last game you played”…

Hey… ALL… I have a name for you to Google/search… Willard S. Boyle… You’ll find IT some nice reading when you discover who he is and what he was into when he was younger… and where he lived and all…

There are some pretty fart smellers, out there…

Bill…

…Greensboro Generals…

Thanks for the history lesson. Mention of the Generals brought up all kinds of memories from long ago, since I was born there and have (now) some pretty vivid memories of hearing about them on the news (long ago). I remember one time something about a HUGE fight between them and some other team (probably Charlotte - but that part is too vague). Whatever – I seem to remember that it got a little more headlines that it should have, making the national news. Late 60’s early 70’s maybe? I could be off 10 years in either direction and not know.

I’m thinking '75 or '76 and it was a Charlotte/Greensboro game. I was there, don’t remember all the details but there were several players given game misconducts for high sticking - lots of sticks and fists swinging and blood on the ice and remember, this was in the days before mandated helmets. Oh yeah, there was a hockey game too but it kind of took a back seat to the extracurriculars, as often happened at games between those two.

Willard S Boyle (born August 19, 1924) is a Canadian physicist and co-inventor of the Charge-coupled device.

Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Boyle served in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II but did not see active service. He gained a BSc (1947), MSc (1948) and PhD (1950) from McGill University.

After receiving his doctorate Boyle spent one year at Canada’s Radiation Lab and two years teaching physics at the Royal Military College of Canada. In 1953 Boyle joined Bell Labs where he invented the first continuously operating ruby laser with Don Nelson in 1962, and was named on the first patent for a semiconductor injection laser. He was made director of Space Science and Exploratory Studies at the Bell labs subsidiary Bellcomm in 1962, providing support for the Apollo space program and helping to select lunar landing sites. He returned to Bell Labs in 1964, working on the development of integrated circuits.

In 1969, Boyle and George E. Smith invented the Charge-coupled device (CCD), for which they have been joint recipients of the Franklin Institute?s Stuart Ballantine Medal in 1973, the IEEE?s 1974 Morris Liebmann Award, and the 2006 Charles Stark Draper Prize.

Boyle was Executive Director of Research for Bell Labs from 1975 to his retirement in 1979, when he moved back to Nova Scotia and served on the research council of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research and the Science Council of the Province of Nova Scotia.
:D

Hi TomS:
There’s no moss growing under that guy’s toupe… The The Nova Scotia Reseasrch Center is just down the street from where I live… However, I never worked there… I visited there many times while I worked at the Dalhousie Chemistry Department. I never ran into that guy while I was around there… I may have, but I wouldn’t have recognized who he was… I worked on several NASA Research projects while I was working at Dalhousie Chemistry Department… The one BIG project I worked on while I worked there was the Electrical Properties of Oxygen free Copper/Titanium Alloys… That stuff ended up on Printed circuit Boards that went to the moon… I worked on that project from 1963 to 1965-66…

Anyway, the hockey game is on… I wantta see IT…

Bill…

ACK! Carolina looks to close it out at home!

:)

…and the late local news didn’t even give the score last night - no mention at all. They do show the fights of the previous week every Sunday night. That shows how big NHL is out here in the Seattle area. (There is a semi-good minor team in Everett that gets mentioned occasionally.) The game was over by the time I got home from work. Maybe I can see one them eventually. Sean has been trying to get me into hockey for a long time. :)

The next game ought to be a dandy, phoo. All out, hold nothing back, everything on the line hockey.

That first goal that the Oilers scored was a “Picture” goal… IT was how hockey should be played… After that play… IT was easy to see who controlled the Game… Unless Edmonton steps up to the plate IT’s all over…

I can only see IT going into more games if the ticket sales controls the series…

I’d have to say IT was the Goalie injury that cost Edmonton the Stanley CUP… IT was a mental thing… In my opinion… IT isn’t the replacment goalie… either…

Unless the Oilers can find a way to beat Ward… IT’s all over…

The Canes are playing great Hockey… IT’s that simple…

Bill…

It’s special teams that’s costing the Oilers. Carolina won that last game with their power play, Edmonton lost it because of their power play, that and a combination of undiciplined penalties.

I don’t think it has anything to do with confidence since losing Roloson, look at the shot’s on goal totals. If they could get their powerplay functioning properly, they maybe okay but to win the next three games will be a huge hill to climb.

Right on, Stu - markkanen has been very good - and how much power play time did the oilers get in the 1st? 7 1/2 minutes? And a long 5 on 3? Have to admit, Carolina killed those quite nicely…

Gonna be a fun game! :)

Then comes a whole summer with nothing to watch. :(

OK fellers, lightning hit the ol’ tv set, fried it good! Wife been wanting HDTV letterbox, been holding out because they just too expensive.

Well lo and behold I broke down and spent some moldy ol bucks that have been sitting in the bank. Bought a Sony Grand Wega 50" HDTV. Got to see mondays game in high def widescreen with 5.1 surround!

H-O-L-Y M-O-L-Y !

Turned the A/C down to 60 and felt like I had Rink side seats! Man it was awsum to say the least.

Tonight’s the night! :D

I can only imagine… Whatta way to go… Watching hockey through a CRT Tube is like watching hockey through the Eyes-of-a-Dog…

I’m watching the Sportscast here… They are talking about the “Big-Blow” that went through there overnight… Water everywhere…

Anyway, the GAME is on…

IT’s (the Big-Blow) staying Off-shore as IT blows by here… All we’re getting is a good rainstorm and a little breeze… So-they-say… We’ll see… Tomorrow…

Bill…

Well do we have a season or what? That game 6 was a fun one! Stu, you begin to look positively prescient.

Any predictions on the last game?

I don’t want to make any predictions at all. It’s going to be a classic. But some thoughts on game 6.

Who wants it more. If the Canes won game 6 they would have won the cup, if Edmonton lost it would have been game over. By the end of period two the Canes were only allowed 11 shots on net, and 16 in total for the whole game.

Some thoughts though. Edmonton has seemed to sussessfully have revamped the power play, lots more lateral movement with the open man ending up in the slot or in front of the net. This movement seems to be giving the point men more time to take the open shot. Rumor has it Mark Messier made the pp suggestions to Kevin Lowe prior to game 5.

The injury to Doug Weight is the equivilant of Edmonton losing Mike Pecca. He is definitely the quarter back on Carolina’s pp, plays a huge role in the pk, and quarterbacks a high scoring line. An absolutely devastating loss for the Canes, bigger than the loss of Roloson.

Introducing Eric Cole into game 6 truely shows desparation. Let’s all pray that he doesn’t reinjure his neck. I’m absolutely dumbfounded why he would be released into the lineup. It’s absolute desperation.

Well congrads to the Canes fans the better team won but still that was an amazing performance by Oilers.

Here I Am, Rock You Like A Hurricane!

NC’s first ever pro sports title! It had to go to game 7, too many bucks to give back for all those sold out seats! $100 per seat in nose bleed, $300+ for rink side tickets. That’s a lot of coins. Not to mention missed beer sales.

Biggest congrats to players on Carolina who waited 15 plus years in NHL to get a cup! 22 yr old Ward, was he a rookie sensation or a fluke? Next couple years will tell.
Edmonton played an excellant series thru entire play-offs!

CANES!!! :D

The Canes Bench out played the Oilers and showed better disipline throughout the series… They deserved the win and to show their fans the Stanley Cup on their own ice… IT was a great come-back to the NHL for the year off and Lock-out…

The Tampa Bay team showed their fans the same energy when they won the Stanley Cup before the Year-Off…

The Canes owners did some “Key Trades” during the season, to put that bench together…

IT’ll be different… Next Year… :O ??? Mabey, my Team will wake up and start playing Hockey, next season… :p We’ll see… ???
