Hi Yaz:
We had a discussion this morning down at the coffee shop… regarding all this… The CBC up here is funded by the public and government… But IT appears that they are low on the list of funding commercial enterprises… like Pro Sports… So Sports brodcasts are not protected by public funding, anymore…
Recently, the Memorial Cup, Junior Hockey, was held here in Moncton, New Brunswick Our team went into the final game… They lost to, I can’t remember… IT was broadcast by four Pay Sport’s cable channels, at the same time, up here and across the Country… I didn’t get to see that game… I don’t have cable or a dish… Figure that out… People who are not hockey fans were pretty ugly… There was no other sport to watch on that day…
However, I have a feeling we aren’t gonna see all the Stanley Cup series up here if we don’t have cable and or pay TV… I think we are gonna be “Had” by commercial enterprise. Don’t get me wrong… But a lot of our Tax dollars supports Public Broadcasting… We should be able to see our National Sport being played by our “Boys”… I know there are American kids playing in the NHL. But when our "Boys are bringing home the donuts, we should be able to see them… Do-IT…
Bill…
London Knights last year. Who was it this year?
Hi Tom:
I think IT was the Quebec Ramparts… They beat the Moncton Wildcats?? I think that’s their bench name…
The Quebec bench had I think four players from Nova Scotia… mabey, three…The Quebec bench was coached by a “Caper”… How’s that… StuH…
Bill…
Yes, the Remparts! I love wikipedia!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorial_Cup
I also love the fact that in 1920 the Toronto Canoe Club Paddlers beat the Selkirk Juniors.
Anyway - go edmonton!
The outcome of the series may well have been decided in the first game… Too bad for the goalie… Colossal mistakes were made by the Edmonton goalies… This may affect how the Edmonton Bench plays out the rest of the series… However, each team has to win away games to take the cup… well see how game two goes, for each bench… I saw the first 10 minutes of the first period and then the last few minutes of the third period. But I didn’t see the goalie injury… Missed IT… My eyes were shut and I couldn’t hear either… The game was and should have been a NO-MISS Game … Somehow I did… My neighbours said I shook the Bedrock, in Cole Harbour…
If the teams continue playing as they did in game one, then the Stanley Cup is gonna go south…
Bill…
Edmonton dominated the first two periods of that game.
I saw MacTavish saying Rolosson was gonna be out for the rest of the finals. I’m wondering if that is just mind games, they are usually pretty mum on injuries. I betcha he’ll be back for game two.
Edmonton in 7
EDIT: I just read the CBC website they are saying it’s a knee sprain OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I guess Rolie is out.
Still Edmonton in 7
No way, Stu, not without Rolie. Bill - it was an edmonton defenceman who took a canes player into the goaltender, pressed him up against the side of the net, did not look good. Edmonton was playing very, very well as Stu said for a majority of the game. I thought once it hit 3-0 it was going to be edmonton in 4. But it’s sort of hard to plan for injuries…
Anyway, Conklin is not a bad goaltender - 60 career games with a .905 SA and 2.49 GA - but he will really have to turn it up to a level he has not reached if they are to have a chance. The other option is Markkanen, who has just a tad more experience and similar stats, although he is a bit older and came into the league a bit later.
On the other other hand, Roloson was having the playoffs of his career - matching the numbers he had with Minnesota (but not with Buffalo!), so it’s possible that one of the others could pick up the pieces…
Hmm…I say go with Markkanen…
Canes lead series 2 games to none. Too early to get my broom out?
Too Bad Edmonton… You’re right Yaz… the Canes in mabey 5 games… Again, ya can’t beat up your players and expect to win a series. AND IT depends how bad you want the Cup and a Ring. If Edmonton looses, the Office will be makeing trades this summer… Wait-and-See…
Who knows… That bench may get IT behind them and come back… We’ll see…
Bill…
Goaltending. What a problem. It’s not out of the range of possibilities for Edmonton to win the next two at home, but they’re going to have to do the goaltender shuffle, and there’s no reason to think Conklin’s going to fare any better than Markannen.
Well, I will say this, Carolina is very good; add to that a bit of luck (e.g., all the injuries other teams (like the Senators (which helped buffalo!) and Buffalo and now Rolie) have suffered) and you have the elements of a cup. But I reluctantly say at this point that the Canes deserve it.
Hi Tom:
You’re right… As I see IT… If the Canes win one in Edmonton, they’re gonna be hard to beat… So… The canes in 5 mabey 6…
Bill…
Remember, that some of us are from NC.
While I’m not a hockey fan since I’m from NC (ok…I might become one if I was still living there…a fair weather fan anyway) I find it incredibly ironic that NC can put together a great pro hockey team but couldn’t do the same with pro basketball considering UNC, Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest are all within 60 mile or so of each other and are consistently ranked among the best in the nation.
Saumi still says Oilers in 7.
Don’t forget the San Jose series. Oh ye of little faith.

I know… Stu… Montreal was here in that Tampa Bay series… (Grapes… said IT then)… But now Edmonton has Goalie issues… I think IT’s gonna show on their bench… If Edmonton losses tonight IT’s all over… This is the time of the season that Hockey gets serious… A Three - Three tied series would be nice to see… Bring IT all down to one game…
That’d be Hockey, at it’s best…

Oh Yes… Ted Nolan is going to the Islander’s Bench… He’s the Moncton Wildcats Junior Coach…

Don't worry Phoo we won't hold that against you. Might not speak to you for a year or so if the canes do win

I can live what that…NC and hockey just don’t mix in my opinion
That said…
But, 'bout if you just hang your head for a year if NC beats you in HOCKEY! Oh, the horror…the horror.

Now, now - the 'Canes used to be the Hartford Whalers so they're really a northern team, just transplanted.
And NC has some storied hockey history of the minor league variety; Charlotte had an ECHL team back when the ECHL was TRULY the ECHL, I used to go see them all the time from '72 through '79 (when I stopped being in Charlotte enough to go - phoo, you know why

These days, I'm a Thrashers fan by default since I live in that area, but since I consider NC to be home, naturally there's a bit of a soft spot for the NC pro teams so I have to go with the 'Canes on this one....
Ahh, don’t forget the Winston-Salem Polar Twins, saw quite a few games back in the '70’s. Minor league, but some great hockey!

…Greensboro Generals… |
Thanks for the history lesson. Mention of the Generals brought up all kinds of memories from long ago, since I was born there and have (now) some pretty vivid memories of hearing about them on the news (long ago). I remember one time something about a HUGE fight between them and some other team (probably Charlotte - but that part is too vague). Whatever – I seem to remember that it got a little more headlines that it should have, making the national news. Late 60’s early 70’s maybe? I could be off 10 years in either direction and not know.
Way to go Edmonton! It may just go to 7 games, if pronger and peca can keep bind’amour et al down to 1 a game, and the scoring lines actually score for edmonton!
Bill - I saw taht about Ted Nolan - he has deserved an NHL job for years - remember when he last coached in the NHL? For Buffalo - and they went to the finals! (no goal!) I gather he got a reputation as a GM killer, however, and I thought he’d be in the minors for the rest of his career. The Islanders have a lot going for them, I expect a turnaround in a couple of years - nolan is that good a coach.
