What About Us?

Love pulls you out of depression.

Wrote this last week, and just finished recording tonight…

"What About Us?"

Can’t tell if it’s too bassy (only headphones to monitor)
Also I might make the chorus vox ‘bigger’ at some stage.

Opinions appreciated…Am I getting corny/cheesy in my old age?
:)

The bottom end sounds fine to me. Clean, present and punchy mix, and your did a great job on the vocals. What’s not to like? And as for cheesiness, I don’t even know what’s meant by that term. Is a cheesy relationship song one written from an unjaded point of view? I hope not. If you wrote it with the intent to impress 15 year old girls, then I’d probably call it cheese. But that’s not what I get from the song. And it is a well written song.

Listening to it several more times while trying to keep up with the hockey game, it does sound like you could back off on the kick a little bit.

Made me laugh that!! No I wrote it from a personal perspective.

I was concerned that I'd perhaps put too many cliche's in there lyric wise and melody wise.
Do you think I could just take some bottom end off without going into the mix again?
Thank you Kevin by the way.

Agreed about the kick drum.

What a great song.

The problem isn’t really in the lows. I looked at the mix with Voxengo Span (a free plugin) to see if I could spot the problem frequency, then tried a couple of relatively narrow notches at 142 and 284 of 3db. That seemed to bring the bass out more. I think if you try what I just mentioned, you’ll hear the difference even through your headphones. With a little tweaking, that might be an easier fix than going back into the mix.

i agree about the kick as well, so it’s not a “bass range” for me but much more narrow.
either reducing kick in the mix or reducing kick-related eq (40Hz? 60Hz? I forget).

That’s a catchy tune, and i don’t sense the 15-year-old-girl fromage factor.
but i’m getting aged as well. Aged like fine queso, i guess.

i hear small-choir-type backing vocals vocalizing during the chorus, or an organ to a similar extent.

I really like your clean mixes. Not cheesy, but I love cheesy stuff! I’m going to have to experiment with n-Track drums, I like what I hear! :agree:

Man I am so proud of you Craig.

Any word from PRS yet? Let’s get this rollin’ - I have 2 calls out to old friends in the biz for you - I’ll let you know when they return 'em.

Just write buddy - great job!

Oh, and I forgot… Excellent tune! :)

JDet…do you think I could get away with an eq cut? I’ll experiment tomorrow.(Kevin I downloaded Voxengo but haven’t a clue what to do with it!!)
Tom and Jimothy, cheers for the kind words. I’m quite loving n drums now, and the sound is completely transformed by mixing seperately and adding a touch of high end.

Poppa…you are so kind as always! PRS sent me an email to tell me they are ‘verifying’ my info…gulp…thanks again.

I’ll experiment too. be back shortly (at least geologically speaking).

I wouldn’t guess that the eq would work, b/c it will affect more than the kick.
But that’s a priori, as the philosophers say, and you need an empirical test.

Seems to me just bringing it down a tad is all that’s needed.

Oh yeah, like jimothy says, the tune, recording, whole product kills. :agree:

Thanks Tom that’s some compliment coming from you.

I had a go last night and got to the point of taking down the kick, but I’ve lost the crunch guitar file that’s in the chorus…gggrrrrr

Ok is this any better?

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6599765

I cant physically lessen the kick as I’ve lost some of the files such as crunch guitar and strings in the chorus…I must’ve put them in trash instead of the song folder by accident.

So I took the low REAL down, then re inserted the bass track. I can’t tell on my headphones.

Cheers
Craig

Excellent tune and performance.
Great vocal Craig! "Can you say smooooooth"

Yaz

Thanks Yaz.
Always appreciated! :)

Wow!

The intro and overall feel reminds me of the bands Extreme or Poco.

Vocals are really great - the placement of strings is perfect - this song gave me chills man - I don’t think the vox need to be bigger or anything!

Excellent.

Dan

I dunno, the kick seems off still, for some reason. Sort of pokes out too much. Perhaps it’s the speakers here. IN any case, it’s a minor quibble - the song and everything are great.
