n-Track Recording Contest

I got to try that, Boogex, especially the Marty preset, has plenty’o’bass. Voxengo’s Stereo Touch also has a few good settings, “stage” chained with a flanger will make you sound like Robert Plant in No Quarter, if you know what i mean…

Hey do you ever get too much hiss out of Boogex? find yourself trimming the EQ?
Still, I love voxengo.

i don’t get a lot. a little is part of the speaker simulation algorithm, i guess. I use it solely for that speaker sim. it’s the 4th in a 5-plugin chain for my bass sound, the 5th being a 15-band eq which is highly tweaked, including slamming down the higher 1/4th of the spectrum (it’s bass guitar, so who cares?).

I just e-mailed my first entry for the contest. In case anyone would be interested in specifics in terms of how I recorded here is what I sent in the body of the e-mail:

"Here is my entry for the nTrack recording contest. It is a cover song form Joe Satriani called War. The entire tune was recorded and tracked with nTrack 5 (version 5.11 version 2309). I programmed the drums with EZDrummer and sampled with Drumagog. The bass guitar was recorded with a SansAmp Bass Driver. All guitars (rhythm and lead) were recorded with my Mesa Boogie Mark IV through a Bogner oversized 2x12 (loaded with Celestion V30s). The cabinet was miced with a Shure 57 and Sennheiser e609 direct through an M-Audio Mobile Pre USB. Let me know if you need anymore information."

Looking forward to voting!

Chad

Some very nice tunes came in today. Voting is gonna be tough!

Hey Poppa
Is there a chance of putting together a collection of the tunes,
or maybe part of each tune on .zip file or something.
I always want to hear what everyone’s doing in the ‘n studio music’,
but I only have crappy dial-up. It’s ferustratin.
The same thing with the Sound Click. Takes so long to DL.
Can anything be done (besides me gettin highspeed)?
Maybe ask constestants to send a clip also (that they want heard)
and put those together so someone can get a snapshot of
all the talent?

Friend, highspeed will change your life. I got DSL and now the net is fun again.

With Craig’s entries, and Ange, how am I supposed to get some free stuff now?

(read this with a strong French accent): The artiste, upon seeing the young protege and his remarkable skill and talent, stormed back to his studio and broke all his pincels and tore all his canvases swearing he would never paint again.

Anybody want to talk about vinyl and digital, warm or cold? analog warmth. There are still lots of folks out there with big vinyl collections, Voxengo has plugin called warmifier, kjaerhus Audio also has a free line called classic, playing to a throwback sound.
I bring it up because there is an entry in the contest, don’t want to say just who, with a really slick studio pro sound.
I usually go for the power pop stuff but this one is just too streamlined for me, like the best example I have seen so far of a little too much studio perfection. Kind of pointed out to me for the first time what all this has been about, I mean I have heard friends talk about this for years but never really bought into it,always thought of lo-fi as a rejection of corporate rock.
Also too the track that I am talking about is linked to a website that says they use Mac. I didn’t know n-track had a Mac version. Whether or not the contest has to be of n-track recordings or not (which the rules say they don’t) wonder what the rest of y’all are thinking about a homespun sound? Is this just my imagination or what? It’s not just me and my cronies is it?

all i know is that you could set me up at the Record Plant with pro tools and 48-track board and ADAT and $1200 mics and gold-plated cords and an actual mastering studio and I would still come up with pretty much the same sound as I have now, as slick and polished as a gravel road in Eastern Oregon in July (think high desert).
and some folks with a fostex 4-track can produce stuff that sounds like DL’s Hysteria compared to mine.
My lack of skill makes me sick, but explains a lot!

I was listening to some of your clips. Don't sell yourself short. You've got skills!

Lo-fi of the GBV sort was merely the result of a lack of equipment. But there is an aesthetic to that sound.

As for vinyl vs. CDs, well, no contest there in my mind - I love the sound of vinyl. Perhaps it’s just what you grew up with? But then I think a good wax recording is more pleasing somehow than the best digital recording. There’s a kind of presence there (and I mean listening to the actual wax).

As for Angie and Craig taking all of the booty - well, we should be happy for them!

Really!

I am happy for them!

Yep!

Happy!

:agree:

Me too, they deserve some recognition and I was just kidding.
:) True that there’s more than just them that have posted some great tunes and real qualtiy recordings.
Ha! JDET! That’s the spirit! True grit and true to yourself.

I
´m going to be laughing at this all week!....

Yep - it ain’t a given who the winner is yet - keep ‘em comin’ folks - what a pleasure it is to hang with such a creative group - all of you!

Hi PW,

Yep. A talented bunch of folks hangin’ around here… I don’t know if I’m going to be able to get anything together or not… I have to learn a bunch of new songs for church. Most all of my music time is spent transcribing and learning/practicing guitar parts. Check out the new stuff we are learning HERE. Good stuff man…

D

Talent is running amok here!

I’m totally impressed with everyone’s entry so far!

Well…with the exception that Poppa hasn’t entered "I Still Wanna Be A Cowboy"
Sorry but this is my new favorite tune! Besides, it describes me childhood!

Yaz Rogers Autrey You betchum Red Rider! :agree:

“Hey D, tried to open the files on that link you posted and get pages of code or something.”

Thanx so much Yaz - It’s one of my top 5 fav tunes I writted my own se’f.

I even loved my bg vocals on that’n

Thanx buddy - you made me smile. :)

I agree, there are some really good entries so far. I like the fact that there are so many diverse styles represented. Keep 'em coming!

Well Poppa, I call em like I see em!

Actually the lyrics are close to home for me, had my Roy Rogers Cap guns when I wuz little, and makes me think of a time when life was so much more laid back and easy, which I miss.
I’m still a youngin’ at heart!

Yaz

Poppa, PLEASE enter 'The man I used to be’
It’s what song writing is all about as far as I am concerned, itfound a solid place in my heart.
I just had to share it and played it to my family, a song like that needs sharing.

Ange x

PS…Tom, any chance you could enter ‘Good King George’ I love that song.
It’s been stuck in my head since I joined the forum ( think you’d posted it near the time I joined) so you should definitely stick it in the contest too! :)

Ange x
