Studio

The Behringer DJ Mixer has arrived:

At first glance, it’s beautiful…
If it’s any indication, it’s heaver than I imagined it would be…

Good

????
We’ll see…
The Photo blog has been updated to show the mixer before it replaces the mixer that is currently, in place, on the DJ Desk…

I have a Bass Bin to install under the Desk that the Hill Studio mixer is installed on… It has to be raised off the floor by about 2"-or-so…
I can’t imagine the bass bin to go anywhere else… I’m attempting to recover as much studio floor space as possible… so…
it has to go there…
It has a 15" speaker in it…

Anyway, steady-as-it-goes…

Bill…

p.s.
I’m watching-and-listening at the Italian/Slovak
Football Game as I write this thread…
What’s happening to that Italian Team

????

:(

:heart-break:

Just out of curiosity, what do you use the DJ mixer for?

Hi TomS:

My plan is to use the DJ Desk to create-and-edit videos and mix music to photos…
Not necessarily moving clips but photos, as well…
I have a lot of photos that I’d like to connect music to them… I’m playing with some ideas…
Maybe, there’s other ways to do this, but then I’d need a faster computer…
I’m discovering that already…
It’s an old ASUS/Intel/XP P-4 that I had several years ago… BUT the setup so far shows some promise… The DJ Mixer is integrated with the Hill 24 to 8 to 16 to 2 Desk… In-and-Out…
in both directions…

So far, it seems as though I’m replacing all the hardware from the original setup, one piece at a time, with new hardware…

Bill…

[EDIT] I wish I could have watched that NHL Player’s Award Show last evening…
It was on here just too late for me…
I was on the road all day with that charter yesterday… It took a lot of concentration and mental energy to do that…
I saw maybe, 4-5 minutes of it…

I’m working away in the studio…

I needed a pair of XLR -A3F connectors Friday evening…
I made a call around to see if they were in stock, instead of running around town…
The young fellow said…
Oh Yes they’re in stock he’ll set two aside… I said I’d be right over…
Anyway, when I got there they were set aside…
I’d be right outta there
in-no-time…
Something told me to look…
They were A4F connectors…
BoY…
I hate that…
I can’t believe A3F connectors are so scarce…

Anyway…
again I can’t go into shops without looking around…

Here’s what happens

I came home with another mic…
It’s an AVLEX AVS 77 Mic…
They have no market for a mic like that at that Music Shop…
They were shootin’ it out-the-door at $125.00
Am I ever a sucker, for a deal like that… :O
:p
:)
To sweeten the deal he threw in a mic cable AND I went out the door without the XLR A3M connectors.

What do I need another mic for …
anyway…

I’m not even tracking…
????

Bill…

p.s.
It works “Some Nice”
all I gotta do is…
put somewthin’ in front of it…
hehe…

p.s. 1

I’ll post some photos of it when I get the camera running…

It’s wet today…
I guess we need some rain to keep everything green…

Anyway, I got the camera out and took some photos of the new Behringer VMX 1000 DJ Mixer and AVLEX XMS77 Mic

If the weather clears today, I plan to modify the Hill Mixer Desk…
I need to raise the desk by some 2" - 2.5", to place the Bass Bin under it…

The signal send to-and-from the DJ Mixer and the Hill Audio desk needs to be Isolated/Transformer’ized…
There is a 60Hz interference between the two consoles…
That means four transformers…

If it ain’t one thing, it’s a dozen…
:)

Bill…

The weather dried off…

So, I thought I would continue to modify the Hill Desk and raise it about 2.25" to allow the bass to fit under the dask…
However, it was not to be…

It should have required about Four-or-Five guys to complete the task properly…

“Murphy’s Law” has taken hold…
BIG TIME…

:p
:)
:disagree:
I’m not sure how much damage has been done…

Bill…

Ouch, CEEEERRRRRAAAASH!

Is that a Allen and Heath? or Soundcraft board?

those can get heavy.

jerm

Hi jeremysdemo:

I can describe it as…
It seemed to happen in slow motion…
The legs folded/collapsed in slow motion as it (the table legs) began to fold…
But as it hit the floor the angle of the table top allowed the console to slide off the surface…

The console is pretty weighty…
I’d say a couple hundred pounds the shelf under the surface had the power supply and some bass bins and other stuff. The table could have very well been supporting some three hundred pounds…
I wouldn’t be too far off (with the estimate) either way…

Yes…
The Electronic Design Community in Great Breton is somewhat close… Soundcraft, Allen&Heath, Hill and all those names may have been connected at some point-in-time…
I’m not right up on the history.

I know Graham Blythe (the Soundcraft Guy) in his day was at the top-of-the-heap (in my opinion)… I might not have his name spelt right…
Anyway, he used to tell stories of how his Design Mind behaved…

His bedroom was his workplace…
It was setup as his design studio… With chalkboard and layout table and all…
He’d wake up out of sound sleep with these electronic designs…
He’d scratch them on the chalkboard and then return to sleep…
then, he’d come up with more flow-and-signal paths as the project required…
Everyone (where he worked) knew there was something not right about him, however, they couldn’t put their finger on, what it was…
:p
:)

He’d hunt the world over to find just the right knobs, faders, resistors-and-all and parts for the assembly of the electronics to make up the products they sold…
Soundcraft expanded beyond all expectations…
People came-and-went from their organization…
including Graham…

Anyway, that’s the little bit I know about Soundcraft and the British Audio Design of Audio Engineering…
There are other countries in the world that manufacture Audio Consoles, but the British appear to own the rights on Mixers…
Well… :)
:agree:

I’m almost ready to begin putting everything back to the way-it-was…
The table has been redesigned… There’s a few more details to work out…
Design and Engineering (of support Surfaces) don’t come easy to me…
As you can see…
hehe… lol…
All I can hope is, It don’t happen again…

There was a bunch of broken cables and connectors and all…
I consider them minor-in nature…
I just hope there’s nothing electronic, in nature, that has failed…
I’ll only find that out as it all gets powered up, again…
MaNNN…

Bill…

HEy bill

cables are not minor in nature to me, in fact I have over $600 invested in cables alone for my rig! lol

I guess that could be minor to someone but to a poor boy like me that is a lot since I have to work pretty hard to earn that.

Hopefully you at least got some use out of them before they broke, some return on the investment.
Knowing you Bill you will probably just solder then back to working order!

Hi jeremysdemo:

Today, is Canada Day… 143 years…
At times I feel older than that…
a holiday for most… However, the trades, electricians, plumbers and roofers and carpenters worked today so they can get a long weekend…
Government workers ????
they didn’t go in and wouldn’t tomorrow either…
An extra loooong weekend…
for them…
 The traffic out on the strips is awful…
It’s not safe out there…

Anyway, I got the Hill Console back on the table…
The bass bins fit under the desk just fine now…
BUT, the “Feel” of the desk is just not safe-and-secure to me… I am unable to handle the console myself anymore…
I got some help to get it on the desk…
The table, along with the weight on it, wobbles…
I’m gonna need some leg braces, I think… I will try leg supports tomorrow…
I hope it fixes the issue…
We’ll see…

I haven’t powered anything up yet sense the accident…
I sure hope there isn’t any serious failures…
My fingers and toes are crossed…

Yep…

Cables are an important ingredient to the studio setup…
At one time the rule-of-thumb used to be 25-30% of value in a studio setup used to be cables…
I don’t know what it is today… If you skimp on wire and connectors, you either have equipment failures or poor audio…
OR both…
I have all-of-that… lol… hehe…

As I was cleaning up the mess, I put all those cables in a bag and I need to check every cable before I use them again…
I suspect all those cables as taking a fair amount of mechanical abuse when the table collapsed…
Several of the ends separated and broke… :(
:)

Steady-as-it-goes…

Bill…

p.s.
I have to post some photos…
I have bought a new bass…
I went looking for a pair of XLR female connectors last week, this time, and saw this bass…
I couldn’t leave it there…
Poor Me…
What do I need another bass for…
anyway ????

Happy Canada Day, Bill!

Hi TomS:

Canada Day rings in summer, around here…
We have about three weeks of summer before fall begins to be felt in the mornings…
Then, it’s all down hill…
:)
:p

The places to be is downtown Halifax…
at the pubs and eateries and the harbour front…
and all…
The buskers are in and there all kinds of entertainment and things to take in…
The tourist trade is going full-tilt…
and lots of cruise boats coming-and-going…
Follow this LINK to see what’s going on, around town…

Anyway, I got some work done today…
I got some photos to post on the blog…
I have approved and signed-and-dated the table…
:)

finally…
The console is ready to wire…

We’ll see how tomorrow goes…

I need to get some photos of the New Bass…
Maybe, tomorrow…
We’ll see…

Bill…

I got the latest photos uploaded to the studio photo blog…

I’ve worked to the Floor cable chase while the Console Desk was out… I hope that tomorrow I’ll have the desk back up-and-running…
We’ll see…

Latest photos to the Studio Photo blog…

Bill…

Bill, I wish I had both your skills and your work ethic!!!

I’ve been out here this morning… (Workin…
In the…
Salt Mine)
hehe… The weather is just tooo
nice to out there doing, whatever…

I powered the desk up…
So far, the only thing I can see is…
The meter light for Track/Meter 15 is not working…
I’ve updated the photo blog again…
The…
I took a break and dragged out the NEW BASS
wired it up and christened IT…
(The New Bass)…
:)
:p
Now…
don’t laugh…
It usually takes me about three weeks of steady playing to get the feel of a new instrument…

My plan is…
I’d like to rewire the pickups with a phase switch and a series/parallel switch…
At first go, the Nut needs adjustment…
The “G” string needs to be upward adjusted…
If you look closely, you’ll see that the Nut is the only adjustment in the instrument…
No Bridge/Adjustment…
StRaNGe…
But…
?????
There is a Truss Rod Adjustment…
Anyway…
New Toy…
We’ll see…

Bill…

Whoa! Bill! That’s one funky lookin’ bass. MINISTAR - I’m not familiar but it looks tasty.

When I first laid eyes on it I didn’t notice any strings on it, from the angle I was to it…
I thought it was a piece of 2x4 hanging on the stand…
Then I saw the tuning pegs…
I was gonna ask the young kid behind the counter if it was a battery powered toy?
Then, I saw that it was a bass…

A fool and his money are soon parted…
:p

Leave it to me…
???
It certainly ain’t no Acoustic/Electric Bass that I was looking at, earlier in the year…

The original design concept was by some American…

It doesn’t have any more wood on it than necessary…
It’s light in weight and has a surprising amount of sustain…

Bill…

I took some detailed photos of the work I undertook today…
However, the flash (on my camera) behaved poorly and I deleted the photos…
Here’s some photos, after-the-fact…

The meter bulb for meter 15 is fixed and I’m beginning to wire the Outboard/Repro Hardware…
AND checking the console’s behaviour as I continue the wiring process…

So-far-so-good…
:agree:

I’ve got to get some 1-1 ratio isolation transformers…
Intertference and ground loops are beginning to appear…

Par-for-the-course…
:p

Bill…

Hi Today Gents:

I’m here in the studio tracking down ground loops… Yesterday, I went looking for audio transformers to insert into the audio lines between the Studio and DJ Desks…
I am only able to find two of these transformers at the part’s stores, over here…
Anyway, they appear to do the task quite nicely…
The levels I am transferring is in the order of -10 db - to - +4 db…

In the latest photos uploaded to the Photo Blog you’ll see what these transformers look like…
They are temporally installed with alligator clips…
They are working like a charm for the application…
I’ve ordered six more transformers to complete the signal-and-ground loop isolation issues…

THEN…
after testing-and-recording a signal from the Studio console to the DJ Desk using n-Track I encountered an OLD issue that appears to have raised it head again…

It’s the loss of the .npk file…
It is unable to be recalculated/regenerated…
Without the .npk file the audio file is unable to be Edited in any form…

The file can be imported onto the timeline OR played on any audio player that can handle a wave file…
However, it can’t be seen on the n-Track Timeline…

How can I recreate the .npk file of this .wav file ????

Bill…

One word.

Jensen.
