TomS and..

I actually watched a bit of the game last night. I hung in there until the end of the first OT period. It looked to me up until then that the Wings had it going on. I was very surprised to hear the Pens won it. I’ll have to check ESPN and see if I can catch the highlights…

I’ll say this… those guys are some tough SOB’s to do what they do… sheesh!

D

Malone came back - 2nd broken nose this series - that is hockey! :agree:

It’s about time!

Congrats Detroit

Hi Gents:

I was going to come here and post after the game… but, it was really late in this time zone… by the time the game got over…

I watched Hockey Night In Canada interview the Wings Players and Owners and Office Staff and all…
What a great interview they did on the Wings Organization…
I’m not sure if any of you saw that part of the CBC Broadcast, OR If any of you had the CBC Broadcast available for you to see…
To Me…
That part of the game-and-broadcast was great to see…
At least for me, it was…
The Pittsburg Bench played with a lot of Heart…
However, they continued to cough the puck up in their end of the ice…
No team can win the Game and do that…
The Wings played with a high level of discipline… Shift-after-shift…
No team can loose playing that style of Hockey…
AND They showed themselves to be the better Hockey Team…
They deserve to win the NHL’s Stanley Cup…

What a great Game…
Hockey…
Is…

Return to Original Buzz Up PrintTORONTO - Hockey fans called a major penalty against the CBC Thursday as the national broadcaster seemed prepared to do away with the Hockey Night in Canada theme - a beloved 40-year-old musical institution as familiar to Canadians as the country's national anthem.

“CBC won't get away with that,” said Mary Quigley of Cape Breton, N.S., outside the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. “The Canadian people won't let them get away with that.”

Websites carrying news of the possible separation of the hockey anthem from Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts quickly got e-mails from people passionate about the theme.

Online petitions were launched. Some fans of the song shared anecdotes.

“In 1990 my son stood up in a crowded restaurant in Tokyo, Japan and ‘sang' the Hockey Night in Canada theme,” commented a reader on the CBC website carrying the story. “Before he had completed four bars he was joined by various other Canadians he did not know.”

Reports that the theme might be benched next year came when the agency that represents the song's composer said Thursday that the CBC will no longer use the familiar hockey anthem.

But the head of CBC Sports says the song hasn't been shelved yet.

“Our negotiations continue and if we can do a deal for the theme that's reasonable for both sides, we'll do it,” said CBC Sports executive director Scott Moore in an interview. “It's a great theme. If we can't, then we have an alternate direction that we're excited about and that I think will create controversy and create excitement amongst Canadians.”

“But certainly our first choice would be to keep the theme as it is.”

Ack!

I can remember listening to Saturday Night Hockey on the radio…
TV hadn’t arrived here until December of '54… (In these parts)

If I remember correctly…
Foster Hewitt…
(can I spell) ????
anyway, he would introduce the Leaf’s Games by inviting Canada, the United States and Newfoundland to his game broadcast… (that was before 1949)…
Newfoundland was a country of the UK, before then…

on the CBC Radio Network… The games from Montreal was broadcast by…
AND… I forget his name just now… Why does that escape me…
????

Anyway, the League was six teams back then…
The schedule was set-up that if Toronto was away, the Game came from Montreal…
For the life of me…
I don’t remember the song “Hockey Night In Canada” (the Song), being played while the game was introduced…

Can I say this-about-that…
???

It appears the the CBC Network is in the Nickel-and-Dime Mode…

As I understand… The copyright of the “SONG” is up for renewal… AND as much as I know, the legal agreement for renewal of the copyright is not gonna be signed…

The Lady who wrote the song now lives in the UK…
I hear that every time the song is played (on the AIR) she receives $500.00…

from the CBC …

Radio
Hockey Night in Canada has its origins in the General Motors Hockey Broadcast which transmitted Saturday night hockey games of the Toronto Maple Leafs beginning in November 1931 over the Canadian National Railway radio network. In 1933, the CNR's successor, the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission, commenced broadcasts of Montreal Canadiens and Montreal Maroons games on its Quebec stations.[1] In 1934, Imperial Oil of Canada took over the sponsorship from General Motors Products of Canada and the broadcast became known as the Imperial Esso Hockey Broadcast.[2][3] Transmission began at 9 p.m. Eastern Time (the beginning of the second period of play). Starting in 1936, the games were broadcast on CRBC's successor, the CBC. In much of Ontario and points west the show featured the Maple Leafs and were hosted by Gordon Calder with play-by-play announcer Foster Hewitt and colour man was Perc Lesueur.[1] Montreal broadcasts were hosted by Doug Smith and Elmer Ferguson broadcast for Montreal Maroons games in English and René Lecavalier broadcast Montreal Canadiens games in French. After the Maroons folded in 1938, Smith and Ferguson provided English broadcasts of Canadiens games. The great popularity of the radio show (and its announcer Foster Hewitt) across Canada made it an obvious choice for early Canadian network television programming.

CBC Radio aired Saturday night HNIC broadcasts through 1965, switching to Sunday nights from 1965–76, after which the games moved exclusively to television coverage. In Toronto, CFRB (originally a CNR Radio affiliate) continued to simulcast Maple Leaf games for many years alongside CBC Radio's Toronto station CBL.

Television
Hockey Night in Canada began airing on Saturday nights on CBC Television in 1952, retaining Imperial Oil as sponsor. It continued to feature regular season NHL games on the English network every Saturday evening during the NHL season, and retained many of the features such as the Hot Stove Lounge and the three stars selection, which originated as an Imperial Oil gasoline promotion and survived even as sponsorship eventually passed from Imperial to Molson and, later, Labatt....

The famous theme music, The Hockey Theme, was written in 1968 by Dolores Claman and has been referred to as Canada's second national anthem.

Here’s another interesting tidbit - a chance perhaps to make some serious cash:

Quote:

The CBC’s most recent licence to use The Hockey Theme expired at the conclusion of the 2007-08 NHL season. Claman’s publisher issued a statement on June 4, 2008 claiming that the CBC had informed them it would not be renewing its rights to the composition. [9] CBC Sports head Scott Moore denied the reports, saying that the CBC wants to keep the song and that negotiations on a new licence agreement for the song were still ongoing.[10] However, Moore also suggested that the window to reach an agreement was closing, as the broadcaster would need time to find a replacement if negotiations fell though. Under the CBC’s backup plan, a nationwide contest for Canadian composers would be held to submit a new theme.[11]

Published reports indicate that the impasse was caused by the CBC’s offer to buy the theme outright for significantly less than Claman’s representatives believe it to be worth, as well as the complications relating to the ongoing lawsuit.[12]

While negotiations resumed late on June 5 and continued the following day, in the early evening of June 6 the CBC announced it could not reach an acceptable agreement, and would proceed with a contest for a new theme in collaboration with music label Nettwerk, with the winner receiving $100,000 (the CBC would presumably have full ownership of the theme thereafter).[13]

“ We share with all Canadians the disappointment of this news, as we feel as strongly about the theme as they do. We are proud of the association with the former theme song and are saddened that we were unable to reach a deal, especially when we presented an offer which we believe was not substantively different from what the rights holders had proposed to us. We love the song and know this is a huge disappointment for us and for millions of Canadians. As of today, CBC Sports is moving forward with our plan to have the Canadian public compose the new Hockey Night in Canada theme song.[13] ”
—Scott Moore, executive director of CBC Sports

“ This afternoon John Ciccone communicated with Scott Moore of CBC and requested a meeting on Monday to further discuss the issues surrounding the Hockey Theme. At 4:59 PM (one minute before CBC’s deadline) Mr. Moore advised that CBC intended to proceed with an announcement of a National contest unless he had the basis for an agreement. Ms. Claman is saddened and disappointed that CBC is not prepared to negotiate further.[9] ”
—Statement from Copyright Music & Visuals, Dolores Claman’s publisher

It’s a sad day for Canucks and the rest of Hockey Fans around the world that this decision making process falls into the Hands of a CBC Public Broadcast Network Employee…
I can see through the “Chaff” and say that people farther up the Chain is making this “Moore Guy” the “Fall Guy”…

Corruption and Loonies have influence written all over this issue…

Canadian Politics and and Politicians can’t keep their fingers out of anything…
Ottawa should be ashamed of themselves…

Bill…

p.s.
[EDIT}

I never got a phone call from the Minister of Sports in Ottawa asking my advise on how they should proceed with this matter…
I’m pissed-off that I was left out of the Loop…
Why is That…
????

Hi TomS and Other Hockey Fans:

The Awards Special was broadcast on the CBC Network last evening.
To those who were able to see it…
It brings to an end Hockey till the Fall (September)…
for another season…

It appears that the CTV Network (GlobelMedia) bought the “Rights” to the Hockey Night In Canada, Song…
The payout for the Copyrights totaled some $2.5 Million Dollars.
I stand corrected on the exact amount… But, It wasn’t given away by the Lawyers during the process in making the Deal…
What a “Show-of-Money”… ????

EH…
?

I didn’t hear a mention Of Sydney Crosby…
OR…
His name at any time during the Awards Proceedings…

Is there something in the Air. ????

AND…
to be something posted in the Sports News regarding Sydney and the NHL.
????

Bill…

Who is Sydney Crosby?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_crosby

[QUOTE]Sidney Patrick Crosby (born August 7, 1987)

sigh I was already a married, working adult for many years when this kid was BORN… He’s probably already made more money than I will in my whole life. Anybody got his phone number? Maybe he can loan me a few loonies.

D

PS I feel old today…

Hi Again Hockey Fans:

There’s lots of rumors floating around here that the Crosby Organization is gonna announce Sydney’s retirement from Hockey… If it’s not that…
Something is aloof…

Of course, that’s just my opinion…

There was definatelly no talk of Sydney Crosby during and while the video clips were shown as the Awards Special carried-on, and, was broadcast…

I wouldn’t be surprised with some news, either way…
OR… something may come out as the Draft Day approaches…

You know, this kid makes more money with his commercial enterprises off-the-ice than playing Hockey on-the-ice…
His organization endorses anything from Gatorade to Doughnuts…

I wouldn’t mind if he considered putting me on his payroll…
I think I could do a pretty good job sweeping up the dust that his shoe leather makes… AND…
I could learn how to blow a comb wrapped in paper…

Bill…

What? Crosby retire? What the heck? You pulling our legs, Bill?

Is there a Stills and Nash that play hockey too?

Gramps always said

Where there is Hope,

Yes, but there is trouble in hockey town 'cause Young didn't feel he was getting enough playing time, so he left the band, I mean team.

ROFL

Ya’ know (and with apologies to Mike Cressey AKA Mr. Soul) I never did “get” the Neil Young thing. I thing CSN made some awesome music. Neil Young’s music just never caught on with me for some reason.

D

PS Mr. Stills did catch my ear with THIS though… one of my all time favorites!

PPS Boy… I REALLY took this OT… sorry. HOCKEY RAWKS! YEAH! (Those guys would melt around these parts though…
